Default Spoiled by 800km

7 years of owning a D5 later, it dawned on me that the D5 properly wrecked my expectations with cars. Let me explain.

Unbeknownst to me at the time of purchase, I never did 800km or more on a single tank of fuel prior to owning an A8. Fuel can be $12/L for all I care, but 'range' wasn't a thing I ever bothered to think about. Now, it is a big deal. One of the things I hate about my Tucson and hated about my Ghost was I can only do ~500km/tank. So, with the D5 at a little over half a tank, that is a FULL tank of fuel on other cars. The V6 (or is it an I6) S class, can do the same. The old 6 cylinder 7 series can do the same. A Range Rover can get ~760km/tank (I6).

I never knew what I was missing until this ability to go long and far before needing to fill up. For most people they won't care their cars can only go 500km/tank, but in my case going to and from the gas station is almost 60km... (yes, I live far from civilization).

Anyway, fun fact, it's 440-480km/tank in a Ghost. 12 cylinders....for what reason? To get to a gas station ? This is why I don't get high powered motors. Sure more torque or whatever, but more time spent at a fuel station when the vast majority of the time a car is idling or just cruising...

I can get 500 miles on my S8 if I drive it sensibly. When I drive the S8 aggressively, I always get 400 miles with a full tank. The diesel A8 is on a completely different level range wise.

Well, the best I've achieved in my diesel A8 is 730 miles (1160 km), with a best miles per gallon - driving 200 miles at 55-60 mph of 60.6 mpg.
I am not surprised that Audi have just announced the same engine in the new A6 Allroad - it's a terrific engine.😄

The V8 clearly can't compete. However, under favourable traffic conditions and foresight driving I managed 9,0 l / 100 km, so around 800 km with one filling. That was quite impressive for such car and engine. And no, I was not driving with 80 km/h just behind a truck

I was always surprised at the highway mileage on my early D5 S8, the cylinder deactivation worked well if u could keep it around 70\75. For 15 yrs I kept a diesel Ford excursion for roadtrips and with its 42 gall tank and 18-20mpg it had significant range for the largest suv ever made

Edit.. the 18-20mpg on the ex was at 60-65mph, jump it to 75-80 and it dropped to 15

Speaking about cylinder deactivation on the A8 I always found the implementation to be very basic. As far as I understand the way it works on this car is that deactivates the same 4 cylinders every time versus on the general motors design vis-à-vis dynamic fuel management, it actually will alter the firing order and it can use all the way from one cylinder upwards. This helps with more even engine wear and thermal cycling but comes at the expense of significant cost. I'm just surprised Audi wouldn't implement something like this on the D5
