Default Someone else did this a while back, I think I can predict your results also...

The locator arrows are the big difference...

regards,
Liam

Default Yup, I think it was Sachin, out in CA.

I believe the V1 lit up earlier with less falses than the 8500, but my memory is a little fuzzy. He kept the V1 though.

Default every review site has mixed results so this is the only way I think

I really like the arrow feature on the V1 and the fact that the rear detection seems to be better. But I want to see for myself.

My theory is that the effective of both units depends on where you live. I keep seeing "v1 is MUCH better at detecting blah blah" or "the 8500 blew the V1 away detecting blah blah."

So, I'll see for myself. That's why I specified where I live, cause I really think it affects the results depending on the type of radar the cops have in the area.

I'm looking forward to the results. I've personally had an escort 8500 before and liked it.

Default A Suggestion

If you have a known source you can test with, only have one detector powered up at a time. If both are powered, local oscillator leakage from one detector could interfere with the sensitivity of the other. This could make the better (low leakage) detector look less sensitive.

On another note, I've had a v1 for a few years and find the arrow function much more valuable that I thought it would be. My only complaint is the size and weight of the V1. Sure wish they could make it tiny like my old passport.

Default Considered the 980 but

It was missing the Number of Threats (bogey counter) feature. I'm a information freak so I want to know as much as I can

The 980 and 8500 seemed close in capability with the 8500 having a slight edge. All 3 detectors seem to be #1 everywhere though. Like I said, the only reason I dropped the Bel was the lack of information.

Default You should read info on V1 site about testing errors...

In response to a review, Mike pointed out some common causes of error. One, IIRC, is when the terrain is not smooth... this causes shadows and causes data to be clumped. Important to know about radio wave propagation and set up the experiments so that differences can be revealed without biasing to one or the other. And, you should take lots of data and plot the raw data to look for clumping that may indicate problems with methodology.
