Can we switch headlight washers off?

Is there a way to switch the headlight washers off whenever windshield washing (while the lights are on) is activated? During the recent weather in the Midwest, I had to continuously use the windshield washers, and I'm concerned, because the headlight washers waste so much washer fluid. Because of the overcast conditions, I have to keep the headlights on during the day as well, so it does get a bit inconvenient.Am I to resort to switching the lights off everytime I have to do this (or visit my dealer every so often)?-- Adil '97 A4 2.8 QMS

A paesan (no soldering wires) way of switching the headlight washers off: Remove the driver side part of the grill integrated into your lower front bumper. (it's removable by hand). You will see the hose connecting the windshield washer tank to the headlight washers. Turn the clip around in order to separate the hose from the headlight washer tube. Now it is up to you to decide what you want to use to block that one end of the hose coming from the washer fluid tank. You should also know that the headlight washers come on only if you keep pressing the washer lever for a certain period of time (something like 2 seconds). They also spray in small bursts even if you keep the lever pushed in. In addition, your washer tank happens to be humongous (6.5l / 6.3quarts), so I'm not sure how much of an issue this is. I figure I'll need two refills for the whole Canadian winter - where all A4's have daytime running lights.Gus 98.5 30v

It will spray :-)

When you pull the lever for sub-1-sec intervals, no headlight washers. After that, headlight washers for about one sec, even if you drop the lever immediately.This was introduced in late 97 model. 96 and early 97 spray right away. Of course I found this the hard way - I first modified my 98.5 and then, when checking the circuitry, found that my car had the delay :-)- Stan
