ABT intercooler with stage 2 chip?
Hi, <p>I have an AMS stage 2 chip (1.2 bar) on my 97 1.8T. How much more power would an upgraded ABT front mount intercooler add? The intercooler is in their k04 kit, but I don't want to change the turbo yet. <p>

I honestly don't think adding the front mount intercooler will give you much more power. (at least not by adding the intercooler and doing nothing else) Keep in mind that although the temperatures will drop, you will also lose a little bit of boost pressure through the intercooler depending on many factors such as the design of the core, end tanks, etc but I don't have enough knowledge to comment on the above. The good side is that it really looks cool and is an added safety measure to fight detonation. I'm currently using this intercooler in my TAP stg7 setup along with the orignal intercooler in place.<br>

Well, think about it... The hoppen kit is $6000 and it doesnt include the $1400 intercooler. But it does include some other little things.<br>I just wish these guys would sell their K04 chip by itself so we can build our own kits. Since they sell everything in kits, we have to buy alll of their products and get ripped off in each and everyone of them.<p>Of course, just my opinion.

Cant just sell an ECU (more inside)
The ECU's are programmed to work with other parts, for example, the Hoppen/MTM ECU is made to work with the modified cat, exhaust, fuel pressure reg, etc etc.<p>The only thing you can do, is get the parts that you want by yourself, and if you are close to Garrett, have him do the ECU for you. He wont be able to do a perfect ECU for you if he cant drive the car, it would have to be a generic one cause all engines are different due to manufacturing tolerances, but he can come pretty close. But if you are adamant about it, get them yourself, pay Garrett a visit, and then you will get an ECU specifically tailored to your car like the above response.<p><br>Ned<p>P.S. the $5950 kit includes a full stainless with flex pipe MTM exhaust with catalytic convertor, the K04, ported manifold, Turbo an intercooler hoses, Spark Plugs and Fuel Pressure Regulator. Thats why the cost is high compared to a kit that is just comprised of an ECU and Turbo.

I'd be willing to bet that you would see a significant power increase over the stock intercooler, but I could be wrong. It all depends on the quality of the aftermarket intercooler (probably pretty good) compared to the stock intercooler (piece of crap). Not only do aftermarket intercoolers exchange heat more efficiently, they also flow much better. You're probably losing at least 2 or 3 psi across the stock intercooler at high flow/rpm situations. An aftermarket intercooler would probably reduce that to 1 psi or less (extra boost, with extra safety margin to boot!). If I were you, I would try running without the stock intercooler and see if that helps or hurts your performance any. Either way, you usually can't go wrong with upgrading your intercooler (although they're not the cheapes upgrade).<p>Brad Franklin<br>
