Default HELP--Timing mark--installing belts--help!

I have a Cd-rom service manual for 1997 A4T.
The tensioner failed and the timing belt broke.
I am in the idling position when it happend.
I could be in the dirt **** or maybe life will be good and I hoping did not bend the valves. I have
to prove this by putting a new timing belt. Is it
possible to time the mark without using a special
tools they mentioned when changing timing belt?

Also is there any recalls in regards to a tensioner failure.

Don't you need to pull the heads to inspect the valves?

Actually, a compression test will usually show if valves have been bent.

I have to put the belt first before I can do all those things to test. As I said life sometime is good...maybe its not bend. But please can someone
tell me if there is a way for me to time the belt
without using that special tools everybody is talking about.

Default I don't think that there is a really good way... Unless someone with a 1.8t can chime in..

I know on the 2.8, it's nearly impossible to change the timing belt without the tools.

You can rent the tools from Blaufergnugen BTW.

Yeah! I am in the line for the tools.
Blaufergnugen told me the tools are out right now
and I am in the bottom of list.

Default Andy_TN did it and I don't recall anything special about it.You just need to be careful rotating the

crank without the belt in place.
Andy has a write-up on it.

Default Special tool? For what?

To line it up, you need to find TDC (top dead center) What you can do, is rotate the crank until the number one piston is all the way up. You can unscrew the #1 plug, and insert a long rod and watch it to tell when the piston is all the way up.
Next, you need to rotate the cam until it lines up with it's mark.
Then you should be all set, be careful when turning the crank or cam, because it's possible the valves might hit.
