Default acceleration question

when hitting it really hard, how do you keep the car fast while maintaining smooth acceleration in the 1.8T?

it seems that if you floor it, the car lags a bit as the fuel mixture adjusts- I don't think this is turbo lag since the rpm range doesn't seem to correlate well. If I back off the gas just a bit it seems to help speed things up. there's almost a "sweet spot" on the gas pedal where the car feels fast- over or under that just feels like the car is putting along. again, i'm keeping rpms between 3k and 5k to try and maximize power output.

finally, when the car eventually takes off it's exceptionally jerky- bursts of awesome power followed by a steep drop.

any driving tips here? I should note that my car is stock- not chipped.

thanks!

Default Doubt it is due to air fuel ratio adjustment

Most likely there are predetermined ratios assigned to the driving condition (throttle position, vehicle speed, engine speed, gear selection, etc). AF ratio adjustments are usually done under more steady state conditions. Wonder if it has anything to do with "fly-by-wire" throttle?

Default Could we be feeling the cam timing changing (variable valve timing)?

I often wondered if the little surges and hesitations I feel could be correlated to the speed and load at which VVT does it's thing.

It's normal. They (2001's) all do this. Hopefully they will find a fix.

Default no cable

I don't have the specifics but basically there is no cable from the pedal to the throttle. Traditionally the throttle plate was attached to the pedal via a cable so there was a direct connection. Now when you push on the pedal there is some sort of sensor that determines how far you are pushing in the pedal. This input in then used to open the throttle. The point being that you pushing on the pedal does not necessarily open the throttle. Audi could control the throttle anyway they they choose.
