Going to drive a 2002 Passat and A4 back to back today and buy one of the two.
The A4 is a 1.8tq tip 
in Dolphin with black leather and the Passsat is an ink blue GLS 1.8t manual. I can get the Passat for 22k with Leather package so it is right at invoice. The Audi price I will have to work on. What I plan on doing is putting down some cash on the vehicle I want and having the dealer hold it until I see if this no sales tax thing passes in the next week or so. This should be a fun afternoon.

True that, but...
IMHO, right now it's just not a good time to buy an A4, the interior is too plastic, even the 3.0. Is Audi trying to cut cost or something?. The central locking sys sounded cheap. The 12V outlet in the trunk is a POS. I'd wait for the LCD nav sys and I hope that they'd improve the interior materials. But it is a solid car and it's still pretty decent compare to others, pre '02 A4 owners r spoiled, u know? =)
btw, I have a feeling that the '02 A4s r having some quality issues, in the show room I saw an 3.0 and the trunk lid wasn't aligned.

Don't hold your breath on that fullscreen nav system...
Audi has had one for years and has never deigned to bring it to our shores. Who knows why. I doubt you'll see it here. I agree with your sentiments on the interior... it looks very downmarket compared to the B5 platform A4s.
