OT Poll: If you were to relocate, where would you go? (m)
Seriously - I am highly considering the idea of moving to a new area and starting over. My wife and I are both engineers, so we'd like to move to a place that has lots of employment opportunities. Currently, in the Albany, NY area, there isn't much, it's basically a policitcal capital and there isn't a lot of technology going on in this city. Ideally, a rural area would be nice, low crime rates a must, and someplace that doesn't have planes dropping out of the skies. I've thought of places like Boulder or Denver, Co., but have never been out there. Any ideas? I want to try and create a list, and then I'm going to start researching those places for different aspects about them.

Lots of Hi-Tech companies here who are looking for engineers. I don't know what sort of engineer you are but there are a lot of companies looking for people. (of course it is Canada so there are the usual positives and negatives about that.)

There are places like the Annapolis area, and parts between, that are rural and very nice. For DC, look for metro stations to ride into the city, I know there is one in Greenbelt and college Park, don't know any others off hand.
Also, consider outskirts of Charlotte, NC, and Raleigh-Durham, NC.

Northern Califorina ie wine country lots of high tech good place for kids....
As you already know it's tough to be an engineer right now I know I'm an optical engineer and in my department when people leave they are just not being replaced.
