Pulled transmision today, can it be repaired?
Manual transmission, clutch, and flywheel took 4.5 hours to pull today. I and a friend did the work in a heated garage with the car on a lift.
The transmission had been making a whining noise that varies only with vehicle speed. Under the car, it was clear the noise was from the front differential area. Once out, we could feel a lot of resistance and rough movement when turning both front drives in the same direction. Not a good feeling at all.
Has anyone had this problem and had it repaired? I know I can buy a new or rebuilt transmission, but I would like to repair this one. Thanks,

it's too late to ask this now but..
you sure the whining is with engine speed?
what about particular gear?
i had a chipped 1st gear before and it makes a clicking/tapping sound, but only at first gear
if you are talking about the diff... how abot the hydralics?

Is it the diff only, or the whole box? Perhaps you can just put new diff set in, and be good to go.
I would take it to a really good trannie shop to let them give a good diagnosis. You guys are brave ripping into the car like that =) Nice work!!!

Changes only with vehicle speed
The whine did not change with any gear, clutch in/out, on power or off, up/down hill, whatever. It just got louder and higher pitch with speed.
The clutch hydraulics seem to work fine. I'm not aware of any other hydraulics in the front differential. The problem seems mechanical, like the front drive pinion or something.

I'm not sure
The noise is in the front (main housing) where the front drive pinion drives the front differential. It could be the bearings for the front drive shafts.
It had to come out as I fried the clutch last weekend. There was no pad left on the pressure plate side, just junk all over the clutch assembly. I'll probably put in a Sachs performance clutch.

How was the gear lube? Were there any chunks of clutch lining in the mix?
If your noise was speed dependant, and you feel notchiness at the diff, I would look hard at those bearings, and also at the ring and pinion.

I have not cracked the transmission open yet
The clutch just blew, so it was not a cause. Any clutch debris would only be a problem for the input shaft bearing, which seems fine.
I will take to a shop, although my buddy wants a crack at it. I just can't find a shop that has repaired an Audi transmission before
