Default UUC short shifter installation....what a @#$%!! battle! Worth it though...

Got the UUC SS installed finally, the box had been sitting on my couch for a month calling my name. Finally couldn't stand it so I decided to make time and quickly "throw" it in this evening after work. Hehehehahah... not! Took me about 2 and a half extremely frustrating (but ultimately satisfying) hours. I think more profanities crossed my lips during this time than I've uttered in my entire life! Quite a few were directly at the stubborn 6mm hex nut on the shifter bracket. But..most were aimed squarely on the bolt connecting the shifter shaft (heh, I said shaft) to the lower arm. I mean, I had read in the archives that this part was gonna be a bit of a pain, but I've *never* experienced frustration and pain like that before! (Except for maybe a case of blue ***** in high school..) I'm telling you, getting the nut started on the new 3/8" bolt had to be worse than some forms of Chinese water torture! The results were well worth it though, the 40% reduction feels incredible. Took a bit of tweeking on the 6mm hex bolts to get the position right but now it's like the shifter has been totally transformed. I kept telling myself as I was wiping sweat and grease across my forehead during the installation that it had better @#$*!! well be worth it.. and it was! Sorry for the rant, I feel better now. I love this car. Later guys.

Default That @#$%ing big c-clip

Be sure you have a GOOD pair of snap ring pliars when installing. I also expected a 20 min install, but getting the nut on the bolt is a PIA as well as the f'ing c-clip. Great results though. Not looking foward to taking it out when lease is up.

Default Re: UUC short shifter installation

First of all, forget the pin that UUC gives you. It is way too tight in the nylon bushing. The screw can be inserted in the hole through the shifter and coupling while it is in place in the car.

The fiber nut on the new bolt is a challenge. I found the appropraitely sized box wrench (English) and used some duct tape to hold the nut in the box end. I used a set of small needle nose pliers to twist the screw while holding the nut against it until the nut engaged the threads. After that, I tightned things up by rotating the nut and bolt with the Allen key and using the open end of the wrench to counter rotate the nut. The plate that holds the shift rod to the coupling can be held with a pincer type parts grabbber while the screw is inserted and tightened.

It took me about 2 hours on Saturday afternoon to put mine it.

"Deep down, all #$*&-ing Krauts want to build cuckoo clocks" passed my lips more than once. Then again, I do have a VW and a BMW -- in addition to the S4 -- and two cuckoo clocks.
