Re: FYI: Audi History...
Actually, the four companies formed Auto Union. During the 30's Auto Union fielded a Grand Prix team using a mid engned V12 and V16 chassis designed by Ferdinand Porsche. With Mercedes, they dominated F1. Auto Union also competed with Mercedes Benz in the setting of land speed records. In the '80s Audi produced a show car called the Avus. It was named in honor of a track in Berlin where some of the records were set. It was a modern interpretation of an Auto Union Rekordwagen. The wheels on the S4 are referred to as "Avus" design in the S4 literature. They are very close to the design used on the Avus show car. Audi has a pretty good sense of history. If you compare the TT to some of the 30s race cars, you will note similar styling themes.
Horch and Audi were founded by Dr. August Horch, When he lost control of his first company (Horch) he formed a second automobile company, However he could no longer use his own name. A student son of a colleague suggested that Horch (roughly meaning "to listen" in German) use the Latin derivation of his name, and the new company became Audi.
Audi Delears and Robert Bentley offer a book on the history of Audi entitled "A Century of Progress".
