Default In light of the recent concerns about Tranny and Turbo problems....

If you had the chance to go back in time, and you knew back then what you know now, would you still get the S4? I really want the car, but I'm also hesitant because major breakdowns on almost brand-new cars should be a rarity, and that doesn't seem to be the case.

Default The turbos have been updated; if you get a new '01 w/recent build date you shouldn't worry

Unfortunately, we don't yet know when the switchover was made on the assembly line for the new turbos.

Default It *is* a rarity. Failures are on a small, small percentage of S4s sold.

And no, I would not change my mind about getting the S4.

Default would i do it again? definitely (m)

I developed the siren sound and my experience with the dealer service and OTS in getting the turbos replaced was very good. There have been a couple other minor problems like radio and washer fluid pump. But I have always been in and out of service quickly.

Sure it is a pain to take it into service. But IMO the positives of the S4 far outweigh the problems. This is just my opinion. If I had wanted a completely reliable car then I would have gone with a Japanese make.

One other thing: I think the extent of the problems with the Tranny and Turbos is somewhat exaggerated on this site. The overall percentage that these problems occur in S4s should be pretty small. JMO

Default I'm still getting my S4 Avant...

It is just the nature of internet forums to focus on negative issues. I went through the same things when I was waiting for my A4. Post after post about control arm issues, wastegate problems, wet braking, tranny, etc. But my A4 has been perfectly reliable. There's always going to be some cars that have more than their fair share of problems, but if you think that that is exclusive to Audis you're fooling yourself. IMHO, Audis are just as reliable as BMWs or Mercedes.

Default for those that know what kind of problems i've had...

and they are extensive...

yes, i'd do it again! there still isn't another car in its class/price range that'll come close to an s4. you're looking at m5s for something even close. of course, if i'm looking at spending that much, i'm gonna still keep the s4 and just fork over the dough and put a porsche c2 cab. and an s4 in the garage.

my car, i believe, was a fluke. i'm gonna try and take care of this situation right now. it's not so much the car but the boys up there who need to decide whether they will support their customers or not.

go with the s4. you will not regret! this is coming from a person who is still pissed!!!

Default In a heartbeat.

My S4 is 12 1/2 months old, 21K miles. It was one of the very first to arrive in Southern California, so it has all the early parts. I've had ZERO problems with it, apart from inconsequential silliness with the radio. No torn TBB, no blown turbos, no tranny problems, no bubbled tires. I've left the car stock except for rims - maybe that's why it hasn't been a problem.

This is my seventh Quattro since '86, and by far the best yet. I WILL buy another one, as soon as the next S4 becomes available in 2002 or 2003.

Thanks! It's just an S4 Avant ad I found on the German Audi site. And yes, my Avant will be Imola.
