Question about contesting speeding ticket...

Well, I got tagged for doing 74 in a 55 zone. The problem is that 74 mph is a grossly optimistic number for my speed at that time. The cop said that he caught me coming from the opposite side of the road. It was 1:30 am and very dark. The thing is that my roommate was in the car with me and he couldn't believe that the cop had clocked me at 74 mph either. I was about to argue w/ the cop about the speed on the spot, but thought better of it. Would it do any good to take my roommate to the court hearing to vouch for my assertion or no? I have a clean record up to this point (almost 7 years), so I am hoping for leniancy. Would the callibration argument hold water?

Next time ask to see the display or tape...

YOu could try calibration or you should be able to argue that angel he had it at caused a misreading. Not sure of exact numbers but every degree off of 90 the radars at, cause nth accuracy loss. Being that he was on the otherside of highway, you most likely could argue that point, plus the fact he may not know what he had targeted..

like what road it was on and where, whether you were popped by CHP, county sherrif or city cop. I may be able to shed more light on this for you.

There is something called...

...cosine error (I think that's what it was called and spelled). That can distort a speed reading taken from an angle and it gets worse the greater the angle.

Do some poking around on some search engines to fins out more.
