Porsche Big Red's (brake upgrade)
Go to the Porsche dealership and buy pads, rotors and calipers for a 993 turbo (96-97). Buy a few blocks of 7075 aluminum and go out to your favorite machine shop and tell them to make you some hats with the proper offset and bolt pattern(if you have the CNC program, its a big time saver). Mount the hats on the Porsche rotors and true the assemblies to acceptable runout on your lathe (positive rake only) with a 3 jaw chuck adapter to secure the rotor (those centering cones on the auto brake lathes are not that precise for accurate machining).
Now you have to modify the calipers. First reverse the bridge and nipples so the caliper will work properly in the trailing position...be careful not to strip the fittings. Secondly, go back to your machine shop and have them machine the caliper (where the bracket attaches) for proper offset so the pad makes full contact with the rotor. Make sure you shop has the proper cradles to secure the calipers for this machining. Again the CNC program will be helpful because any machining thats off more than a mm turns your calipers into expensive paperweights. Also, repaint the caliper with Foliatec red or black where you've machined for consistent appearance.
Rotors and calipers are done...onto the brackets. You'll have to engineer the proper offset brackets to mount the caliper to the knuckle. Make sure you use the proper steel...send it out for cad plating for appearance (the plater will give you a great price on only two brackets). Securing the gr12.9 hardware and HR60 shims should be easy. Call Fischer or Goodridge for a set of custom lines with banjo fitting/hollow bolt connections for attachment to the calipers.
Road test and enjoy your brakes. Let me know how much money you saved. SD
