Kinda like why they aren't using the aluminum block in the new M3 - alledged reliability concerns...
is supposedly why BMW withdrew the all aluminum I-6 M engines. I was told by a sales rep in my area that the blocks have been punched a little over their physical limit at 3.3L for the standard casting and that in testing iron was determined to be better for production roll-out due to better longevity. May or may not be true...
BMW certainly appears to have changed their image a little here with this link and the M3 trade offs(at 50K+ per unit, geeez!). Seems like the marketing is more solid than the product/support - unlike the BMW of old.
And yes Audi S4s have an iron block too... just observations.
