Controversy about oil
I phoned AOA to try to get a precise answer to this question. I was unable to get any satisfaction from them. They said that Audi is looking for better ways for the maintenance of the vehicle and it is possible that the dealers have been told that if was not necessary to use 0-30W.
My dealer made enquiries and told me that after talking to AOA, it was concluded that 10-30W or even 15-30W was quit allright and that conditions in North America are not the same as in Europe. (I live in Montreal). Now, that does make much sense to me.
I needed a bit of oil (about 3/4 of a litre) in my car and I finally found Castrol 0-30W that I added in my car. That was before my dealer called me back with his conclusion.
Now, I am really confused. Any help out there? Are there any technical bulletins available on this question?
10w is inappropriate in the US in winter. 15w is always inappropriate except for racing. The bearings are notoriously tight in this motor (narrow clearance). That's why it takes so long to break in, and why they last so long. 0 and 5 wt were selected by the engineers to protect the bearings at low temperatures.
