Default New S4 for me

Just picked up my 2001 S4 on Saturday. It is silver with a 6-speed, onyx interior, premium package, cold weather package, and Bose sound. I traded my 95 Porsche 911 C/2 6-speed. I was tired of leaving the Porsche in the garage and driving my pickup to work. Sure, the Porsche was fun to drive but I had trouble justifying the cost (especially to my wife!). Now I have a car that I can drive everyday that is just about as fast as my Porsche without worrying about the astronomical operating costs. I can't wait until it is broken in!

Default Astronomical operating cost?

Don't get me wrong - welcome aboard and all that, but my Porsche repair experience has been - well I haven't really had much since '94...they have been bullet proof.

And the 993s don't even have to have their valves adjusted. Insurance is less then my S4 - due mostly to being a "pleasure" car. Brakes are good for at least 60K. And with 100K on each they still were on there original clutches.

If I wanted to drive it every day the 993 is easy to live with. No comaprison in the handling department. Whatever...I'm very married too 8^J

Congrats, no doubt the S4 is one of the finest sports sedans around - and a real overall pleasure to drive.

Default A friend has a '97 Porsche, bigtime money pit!

He's had to replace/repair things like power seats, manifold, exhaust, oil pan, a couple of other things. He just bought a CLK55 because he got tired of it. As for me, I would like just the opportunity to get tired of it.

Default Re: Astronomical operating cost?

What I meant by the term "astronomical operating cost" was the cost of owning the car that was basically driven only on weekends. I was making payments, replacing rear tires every 7-8K miles, annual service at $300 to $1000, and forking over big bucks for insurance (where I live, we have the highest rates in the state). I was still on the original clutch and brakes, and they had quite a bit of life left. Sure, the car was fun, but I was having trouble justifying the expense against the amount of use that I was getting out of the car. Sure was fun to drive though . . . . .
