Tire Dilemma: A/S versus Snow Tires
Got to drive the A4 to work now(40 miles/day roundtrip)
I have 2 sets of 18s(ASA JS5 and Silver SLs(on the way from Europe))
Need tires for the ASAs...
Should I go for A/S(for better tread wear) or Dunlop M2s for improved winter traction
I have to use these tires for the commute during the winter
NYC doesn't have much snow, but will the A/S give me enough traction. There is a large hill at my work and I don't want to slip on snow/ice
What should I choose?
To answer your ?. My view is that it doesn't really matter if it snows alot or if it snows once. All it takes is for you to lose control once to ruin your day. I speak from experience and was of the opinion that summer/AS/Winter tires are all the same but now I know better after a nice rendezvous with a side walk. If you want that extra protection, get the Dunlops. Believe it or not, they have pretty good wear. I've used mine for two seasons and they still look new!
Pilot Alpins last 30-35K of hard driving and still have plenty strong snow traction at 25-30K.

I have the Pilot alpins in San Fran, so 90% of my driving was dry or wet warm/cool weather 10% was sierra blizzards.
