Repost for the morning crew. Mobil 1 0W40 vs Amsoil 0W30 results are in, and the winner is...
a tie, both show excellent wear numbers. I was hesitant to run the M1 for longer than 5k, so the results may be slightly skewed, but based on this either oil is good for 5k. Personally, I'll continue using the Amsoil as the engine just sounds quieter and seems slightly more responsive.<ul><li><a href="http://home.ptd.net/~mrbond/Audi3.pdf">results</a></li></ul>

10,000 mile drain interval with alot of 10 mile drives? He deserves sludge.
Which grade of Amsoil, there are many and not all are full synthetic? Personally, I'd trust the oil geeks on the oil forum about oil characteristics before I'd trust some mechanic on a Crysler forum. IMHO<ul><li><a href="http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php">oil forum</a></li></ul>

Who said synthetic oil was a magic elixer that allowed you to neglect your vehicle? PaJohn has it
right - drive short trips and leave ANY oil in for 10k miles and you deserve sludge. That being said, I do think that synthetic may allow more of a "film" to develop on the engine internals due to the fact it doesn't contain all the tramp organic molecules that dino oil has by virtue of its manufacturing process. Dino oil is better at dissolving this film (IMO), IF you do very frequent oil changes. If not, the dino will be much worse after many miles. Also, synth uses a better additive package on average. All in all, synth is so much better, there is no contest.
This film I mention is not at all close to sludge. If you get sludge in your engine; it is neglect pure and simple - you are the ultimate arbiter of your vehicle's operating conditions and if they are severe, then perform the commensurate maintenance for those conditions. And if you got bad sludge with synth, had you used dino it would have been tar instead of sludge!
Take responsibility for YOUR vehicle, don't blame the oil you use if you cheap-out and neglect your engine!
