Default Internal vs External Wasgated turbos. Blown turbo question: If the wastegate is stuck does the -

entire turbo need to be replaced for internally wastegated turbos? My wifes 1.9TDI has a stuck wastegate, and the dealer needs to replace the whole turbo. Luckily she has a 10year/100K mile warranty from VW. BTW it only takes a day to replace it, lucky her.

Our cars are externally wastegated and they can be replaced if they get stuck.

So if ATP gives the option for their K03/K04 eliminator turbos whether the wastegate is internal or external, which one would you choose and why.

Default audi turbos (new models a4-s4..) are internally "wastegated"

this is an external wategate (up to the URS4/6 models)

Default Internally Wastegated --> Little Canister attached to Flapper door in turbine housing..

Externally wastegated means the turbo has no appurtenances connected to it to control boost. You would have a device as manaufactured by Tial, TurboSmart...etc. This is located between the turbine housing and the exhaust manifold, it is a separate unit that can vent to the atmosphere or into the exhaust stream aft turbo to control boost.

Did the car overboost? If so did the dealer perform a compression/leak down test? Might want to keep an eye on oil/water levels for a while to rule out any headgasket or ring sealing issues.

Good Luck though.

Default I definetely think it over boosted. I'm not sure about the compression/leak down test, I'm sure they

did it. I will keep my eye on those fluids. The oil level was fine I checked it before I took it to the dealer, not sure about the water though. Thanks.

Default Ok, the VW Service manager said my car was externally wastegated and the "shiny gold plated" thing -

outside of the turbo could be replaced if the wastegate got stuck. I guess I shouldn't have believed him but when it comes to turbos I'm a bit of a noob :-/ Thanks.

Default Ahhh...so some turbos have the actuator inside? Maybe that's what he meant.

Default the actuator is always outside (it uses a diafragm & spring..must stay away from heat)

the actual wastegate (the flap)can be part of the exhaust housing (internal wastegate ) or on the outside / totally separate from the turbo housing (external wastegate).

Default The TDIs use a VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbocharger) turbo that has no wastegate per se.

Instead it has vanes built into it that direct exhaust gas flow towards or away from the turbine wheel. In that respect it is a part of the turbocharger and can't be replaced.

Our turbos have a wastegate actuator that could be replaced, but the wastegate itself is integral to the turbo.

As others in this thread said, an external wastegate is a device that is entirely disconnected from the turbo and can be replaced on its own.
