Rolling bolt sound under dash?
Maybe similar to a previous post, I have a sound coming from the driver side dash that sounds like something rolling back and forth and then clunking when it hits some endpoint. It happens when I accelerate or stop, and sometimes when turning. At first I thought I left the cigarette lighter out of its socket in the ashtray. But no such luck.
A month ago, my kid threw a lollipop stick at the windshield and it got stuck in the gap between the windshield and dash. I tried to extract it with a bent wire, but it disappeared under the front edge of the dash. However, I don't think a paper lollipop stick could account for this sound, which sounds like something heavier, more like a bolt, rolling around.
I just began to notice this a week ago (after my first oil change...not that I'm implying anything). I really don't want the dealer taking my dash apart chasing this down. The car has been so quiet and squeek free up until now. There are certain to be more rattles and squeaks if they have to take things apart and put them back together.

Yes! I also have that on a 2.7 I picked up last week. It sounds like a small but heavy object slides back and forth in about a two foor arc under the dash directly in front of the steering wheel. Also a intermittent buzzing sound to the left of the dash and sort of an irritating light brushing sound from the A/C.

I had a loose bolt also and found that it was one of the fasteners that holds the top part of the panel that is above your knees on the drivers side. There is a plastic plate you can pull off above the steering wheel to check it. My service advisor showed me how to do it. Apparently one of the fasteners anchors was defective and didn't hold the "bolt". Send me an email if you need more info. I now have peace and quiet!!!

I have a 2001 S4 Avant that has also developed this sound, like a marble rolling back and forth when I stop and start and sometimes when cornering as well. It sounds like it's coming from the center console or glove box area. I've emptied out all the storage compartments, (including spare tire well and carjack/tool area). Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
