Octane requirements for chipped engines.

I have seen much discussion on octane requirements on this forum. First of all octane in the US is measured by a different method than in Europe. Europe and most of the rest of the world measures octane with the RON (research octane number) method. In the US, it is R+M/2. That is the RON method + the M method which I can't remember what it stands for divided by 2. This results in a number which is about 5 less than it's Euro equivalent. 93 in the US is equivalent to 98 in Europe. Most chips bring engines to take advantage of 93 octane and will not change the timing sufficiently if less octane is used. This is why engines ping with less octane. Use higher octane to avoid this.
