Towing a AWD car?

Yesterday I was driving to work and passed a flatbed truck with 4 cars. 3 cars were on it while the 4th was being pulled. I was surprised that the one being pulled was an Audi (100, I think) while on the flatbed was a Ford, a Honda, and something else (I don't *think* any of the 3 on the truck were AWD). At any rate, I thought this was the *exactly* wrong.

Is that the case or is it okay to tow an AWD vehicle like that?

Bad News!!

Check the manual. Hope it wasn't really a quattro. Or maybe the driveline was removed??

Tow truck operators don't care.

My wife had our Avant Quattro lifted up (while I was standing 15 ft away to pick up our son from the baby sitter) by a tow truck operator. She told him to put it down and fortunately he did without payment (which I think is theft). What she didn't know was if he would have towed it, it would have wrecked the driveline.

What repercussions are there for tow operators who pick up a car and proceed to destroy it by the action of towing it away anyways? None? This can't be. They must know that they can't tow 4 wheel drive vehicles. I'd like to know if they can be sued.

I guess it depends where you are. In my experience the operators are aware of the towing needs of vehicles and use flatbeds or dollies to tow in these cases. Though I shudder to think what could happen if the car's getting towed and you don't know it. The 2.7T doesn't actually say "quattro" on it anywhere, does it? Maybe a little sticker in the window would help?
