Default handling /performance of the 2.7L vs 4.2L?

Recently did a back to back ride of a 4.2L against a 2.7L A6. Question is , will a 2.7L gain the low end performance that the 4.2L has after a 50hp chip mod? Frankly, I thought the 4.2L handled better due to the extra rubber and reduced stance. But at about 8k more, I'm considering a 2.7L with new wheels, tires and chip. Any comments , thought? My present vehicles are a '99A62.8L (pig even with a Wett Chip), and a modifed '93 NSX (a REAL performer!)

I felt the same way. I loved the handling, response, and mechanical invovement of the V8. I also was taken by the way the 4.2 looks with the flared fenders and distintive front end. I had to go with the 4.2. You can't make the 2.7T look like a 4.2 and it will never have a V8. I truly believe the 2.7T to be a great car however. Both, IMHO, are better with the sport package.

My humble apologies to those who have the 2.7

As a 4.2 with PSL there is simply no comparison between the two when you are interested how how the car looks. Flared fenders, lowered, sports wheels, seats and V8 performance.

If you want to turn heads the choice is 4.2

It really depends on your mission/objective/tastes. Both are superior vehicles. But as was mentioned earlier the 4.2 is a bit more distinctive and aggressive looking. AND...it a "super cruiser". The 2.7T would be a bit more fun to "bang" around the corners of a tight 2 lane road. It really depends what YOU are looking for. As you have noticed they both have a completely different "feel". I also think the rear seat in the 4.2 gives the interior a much better look and feel in the back.

The 4.2 is the one that "tripped my trigger"! :-)

I agree with JP4. Both are excellent. Wonderful to be able to choose from both! Go with YOUR likes!

My handling interests lie more in the
"slushing arould", 0-60 type . I found most cars do fine above 60mph expecially if they weigh over 3500lbs. If you were interested in this type of handling, performance, etc, would I be better off in a chipped, different tire, 2.7L?

In terms of pure performance the 2.7T beats the 4.2 off the box. The 4.2 is ~250lbs heavier and geared longer. Chip both and the 2.7 will win by an even larger margin, chipping giving much greater gains in a turbo than in a normally aspirated engine. Plus, you can get the 2.7 with a 6sp manual.

There is anything wrong with the 4.2. It's a great car and probably would be my choice for highway driving with a triptronic. The 2.7 just happens to be faster.

Neither car is an NSX, obviously.

Personal opinions: The standard suspension is too soft. Get the sports suspension unless you are planning to get an aftermarket suspension. Maybe I should say, get the sport package EVEN if you intent to modify the suspension. You'll get the sport seats and you'll probably have to modify less.

If you choose the 4.2, get the 17" wheels. If you go with the 2.7 find some aftermarket 17" wheels (some go to 18" but 17" is enough for me).

Best luck with your decision. You'll get a great car no matter which way you go.

Default One more thing...

I think you can roll the fenders to make a 2.7T look like a 4.2.

Eduardo: that's a great summary of the differences between the 4.2 and 2.7T. Two other points to consider are the longevity of the turbo 6 compared with the 8, and your personal preference for tip or 6-speed. I still can't decide!

I, too, was concerned about turbo durability but was assured by several people that it was not a problem. One said, "the whole car will fall to pieces before the engine does", or words to that effect.

I drove a 2.7T 6sp and a 4.2 Triptronic, back to back, and chose the 6sp. Again, there is nothing wrong with the Triptronic, but a manual box it ain't.
