Default New to Audi and I have a question....

Hi, I'm going to be getting an A6 soon, and it will be the first Audi I've ever owned, so I don't really know much, especially not about the A6.

I was looking and I test drove a black A6 2.8 and I absolutly loved it, however I notice alot of you guys get the 2.7T and the 4.2. The 4.2 is defiantly out for me, but is it a crime to get a 2.8 over the 2.7T? If anyone could give me a concensus on this question?
Is there a big price difference for the performance difference?

Thanks guys!

Default I did the 2.8 route

I decided on the 2.8 because I got the car fully loaded for a very good price. While the 2.7T is much faster, the 2.8 isin't slow.

It's adequate off the line, and pretty good for passing power. I usually have my wife with me in the car, so I don't get to drive the way I want anyway :-(

I basically needed a family car, but didn't want a Camry, Accord etc.

I'm very happy with the decision, and the money saved could go toward a car I could call my own...(TT, 3 Series Coupe, etc)

Default Very happy with the 2.8

Avant, just three weeks old (silver metallic, tungsten/onyx, everything but xenon and warm weather). Wanted awd quattro, and a good place for the big dog. Will also be perfect for the Maine life style we plan next year.

I am pleased the 2.7 and 4.2 folks on the site are excited about their power, but find the acceleration, passing power, and overall reserve on the 2.8 more than adequate. The recomputing Audi did for 2000 models has been effective. As advertised, the intelligence in the computers learned my fast off the mark style, and I get the acceleration I need, and an overall smooth experience throughout the full range of driving situations. I love the car!!!

If you're happy with the A6 2.8, then go for it. I have a V6 30v 2.8 A4 and it is a very satisfactory car, but, IMO that engine is underwhelming in the A6 due to the increased weight. Particularly with a TIP transmission. I would be afraid you'de lust for the Turbo after a few months and be unhappy with your choice. At least, I would be.

Default Your question...

First of all, congratulations on wanting an Audi A6. There is nothing terribly wrong with getting a 2.8. The decision is completely up to you. With a 2.7T you almost equal the power of a 4.2 but pay less for almost the same amount of fun and a little quieter engine. The 2.8 is a little underpowered (compared to the 2.7T and 4.2) but is still a lot of fun. I test drove all 3 versions and liked the 2.7T the best. The 2.8 was slower on pick up but still kicked you with a nice power band. I think that if you test-drove it and like it, you should go with it. Again it's your decision totally. :-)

Enjoy what ever you get,

Default I chose the 2.7T...

I had originally ordered a 2.8Q 5M - it was quite fun to drive and seemed a lot livelier than the tip. I spent some time wondering if I would be unhappy not having selected the 2.7T engine - Autopacific says the leading source of dissatisfaction with the A6 2.8 is lack of engine power. The 2.8Q is not slow and is a great car. But after test driving a 2.7T I changed my order immediately. The cost is higher - almost 4K as I have it configured (3K if I had kept the options the same) - but I reasoned that I want to keep this car for a while and the incremental (yearly / monthly / daily) cost was modest. The 2.7T also made the C&D 10 best list.

There is nothing wrong with the A6 2.8Q - its what I would buy for my wife. The 2.7T has a lot more straight line thrust without being wildly overpowered. Very nice engine.

Default Drive both back to back and go with your heart ( and wallet )

The most expensive car you will buy, is the one you are quickly scheming to replace because " I shoulda got a...". Whether this means power, space, features, or price, buy the car that suits YOU best.

If you can walk out onto your driveway every morning and feel good about your choice, then you've done it right.

Default I have a 2.8 and a 2.7T and ...

I love them both. If you never drive the 2.7T, you will absolutely love the 2.8. Now, after driving the 2.7T almost exclusively, going back to the 2.8 it feels very slow, but after a bit, I'm back to lovin it again. Both are excellent cars. It mostly depends on your driving style and what you like and expect. Good luck.

Default Re: I also chose the 2.7T... Long

Yes, we looked at the 2.8 and my DH tried to convince me that this was adequate for me. What do you need that extra horsepower for anyway, he would say. After driving both back to back, I had to have the 2.7t! Fun to drive is all I can say. I even drove the 2.8 first, so it wouldn't be as much of a let down.BTW prior to being a mom, I always had sports cars . In order to appease my DH with the extra cost, I am keeping options to a minimum, closing the gap between the two models in price. I also figured the resale of the 2.7t would be better in the big picture.

I always searched for a car that would suit my needs in carting the kids and plenty of trunk space, but a blast to drive. This is it! I am going crazy waiting for my 2001 on order!

Drive both back to back, and look at your finances as well. Whichever one you feel content with will do. They are both great cars!

Default Test drive a 2.7T

If you're used to a BMW, 2.8 is very comparable to the 528i, a little bigger, a little smoother, but not as sharp handling. I was deciding between a 2.8 & 528i last Christmas. Then the 2.7T came and the first time I stepped on the gas paddle, that's it. No contest, it's such a smooth ride.
