sizing up the competition
This engine doesn't appear to be a big threat to the 2.7T. This despite a sentence in the C&D $40K shootout that implies that the 530i would win back the title for BMW.
However, with the reported power and speed of the 3 series, I can't see how the 530i is going to get to 60 in under 7 seconds (stick), thus given it still a large disadvantage vs. the 2.7T which can make it in 6.0. With an auto, the gap will likely be narrower, as BMW pays almost no penalty on the 5 series for employing an auto tranny.
And since the A6 will have PSK for next years comparo, I think the 2.7T could stay on top. Good news for us Audi folks.
The article included also makes passing mention of the 330iX.

http://www.canadiandriver.com/news/000412-5.htm</a

The 528i previously was 7 secs to 60, 7.7 with auto (C&D says 7.8). Thus, BMW actually pays a larger penalty than Audi, although percentage-wise it is the same.
So, if the 528i falls to 6.6ish and the 2.7T is at 6, with the autos at 7.3ish and 6.6, the race gets a lot tighter.
The 2.7T becomes less of a slam dunk over the 5-series (in the manual case) than I thought.
BTW, BMW's site still lists the 540i as having "the only 6-speed manual in its class". What class is the 540i in then?
Besides, who cares what the hacks at any car mag think? I preferred the BMW, but couldn't make the payments, and have grown to love my A6. Others have fallen in love with the Audi's looks at first sight. Any reason to choose between the two is good enough.
