Default Last night while taking friends to dinner, my 4.2 died when I put the car into reverse.....

I was turning around on a side street and had to put the car into reverse since the street was too narrow. I whipped into the turn fairly fast and stopped fairly fast (traffic coming!). I came to a complete stop before changing gears as I always do. As soon as the Tip engaged reverse, the engine died. It started right up and the diagnostic computer indicated everything was fine. No problems since.

Has anybody else experienced this?

Default Sorry to hear that Stu B. I haven't experienced that but once when I was low on gas and took a long

turn very fast the car lost power but did not stall. Were you low on gas? If you were then maybe this condition with the turning, stopping and then the shift caused it to die. This is all I can think of. Please keep us posted. BTW, what's with your gorgeous new wheels? Should I take some more pics this weekend?

Default Could be as Pablo1 described, or the shifter did not recognize the "drive" mode

and defaulted to the "foot not on brake" mode - thus not letting the car run.

If this bothers you again, have the shifter position sensor/mechanismn checked first.

Filled up on way to dinner. I hope it was no more than a rare computer sensor overload so to speak!?

Default More electronic problems in the A6 4.2QT (long)....

On Sunday night I had (for the second time) a related problem: after turning the ignition key into off position and switching the tip lever to P position I could not remove the key. I felt that the lever position was not recognized (somehow soft feeling, not "locked"). I had to switch on and off the engine several times, before the P-position felt recognized again and since then everything is back to normal.

The other electronic problems were related to the NavPlus / stereo / Bose system. About four times I only heard a turbine-like sound after starting the car instead of the radio station which was on when I left the car. Also the funny "Audi..." splash screen on the center console did not show up during initialisation.

I had several occurences of such "glitches" in the electronic system of that car and (as an electronics engineer by education) I think that these are small design faults in the electronics circuitry (not enough resistant to electronic noise conditions as they are normal in a car environment - which is very demanding BTW).

What I am concerned is if sometimes - of course after warranty has expired (which is only 12 month here in Europe!) - such a glitch could damage the control system in a severe way and then it could get pretty expensive to fix...

If others also have similar problems it could be worth to start a new thread whith it?

Your post makes it sound like you shut the engine off before selecting 'park' on the gear selector. Is that your sequence? If it is, I would select 'park' with the gear selector before turning off the ignition. Your transmission 'lock-out' system may be getting tripped up that way.

We do not have NavPlus in States. Not much help there.

Default Re: Inability to remove key

Happened to me too. But it is a mechanical issue!
A friend was driving my car, he parked and could not remove the key. I jumped in and attempted to diagnose the problem.

Started the car turned it off several times. Then I grabbed the thumb lever that you squeeze before taking it out of park. It felt different, like it was half engaged.

Moved the shift lever into drive then back into park and the key was free to remove.

If I were to try and describe what I felt,
it would be as if there is a Male pin that must fit into a recepticle. When fully engaged it releases the key. It seems that my friend must of only partially released the squeeze dealie on the shift ****, causing the probe not to fully engage. There for the failure.

Once cycled all was well.

I do not remember the sequence in question - but I normally also shut off after having selected "Park". But the fact that the system needed several approaches unless it came back to normal operation shows me that something is not always working in the right way.

Regarding NavPlus you are right but I could think that also the standard Nav system which is avaiilable in the US has the same problem?

I had this exact situation occur when my wife drove the car. I have never been able to duplicate it, but only know that that button on the shifter was half way in when I got in the car to see what was going on.

Could be a faulty safety lock solenoid. It may be shorting out.
