shakes at 65 to 70 mph the car has eaten 3 sets of tires
The vibration went away and them came back in couple of day- just like your case.
I called AoA and they contacted the dealer.
I am scheduled for a test drive (again) early next week.
I wish I had better news.
Sorry to hear of your continuing vibration problems. I can imagine how completely frustrating this must be.
If the problem has occurred with 3 different sets of tires, then clearly it's not the tires. Have the same wheels been used each time, or have the wheels been changed, too? (If the same set has been used, one might have a slight degree of runout.)
April's comment about the shocks may well be on target. All springs have a natural "resonant" frequency. On many cars, this frequency corresponds to roughly 60 mph or thereabouts and can be felt through a range of +/- 5 mph or so around the specific speed. If a shock is bad, it is unable to damp the spring oscillation that occurs at the key speed range and the whole wheel, tire, suspension assembly, etc. will rapidly bounce up and down. It won't happen below the resonant speed range or above. (Well, maybe at TWICE the resonant speed!) So, this is a good possibility--it would cause shake at the same speed with any set of wheels and tires.
Now, the biggest puzzle is why the problem goes away for a day or two after you visit the dealer. An out-of-true wheel, bad shock, or driveline imbalance would always be there. If your dealer used the wrong wheel balance weights, maybe they would be knocked off by the suspension arms when you go over a particularly nasty bump? I can't think of any other explanation for a "temporary" solution that doesn't last.
Good luck. This is a definite bummer and the ultimate resolution may be a replacement car. Neither your dealer nor AoA would be happy about that solution, but you the consumer cannot be expected to live with a defect such as this--in a $40,000 car or a $14,000 car.

I got my brand new A6 Avant 2,5TDI 180HP Quattro for only 4 weeks ago.. The problem is that I HAVE THE EXCACT SAME PROBLEM AS YOU!!!! They have tried to balanced the wheels for 4 times, and the shakeing at 80-90 km/h is still there. It's a small vibration in the whole car - not only the stearing wheel. I have spoken with the dealer again, and the have addmitted that they have had a this problem with many A6 cars the last time. The problem was probably a imbalance in the drive shaft, or tensions in the wheel suspension! My car ahs been like this from the very first kilometeres, and has been like it all the 4 weeks I've had it.. But the WORST of all is that the gut at the workshop couldn't promise me that the vibrations would dissapear completely after a repair - maby only from the stearingwheel!!! I couldn't believe what I just heard! Well.. If they can't fix it, they will have to take the car back!! That's for sure.

I've run one 1 set of PepBoys tires for the past 43k miles without any tire problems, but the 65-70 shakes is still there. I suspect plenty of A6s have this shaking problem, but it may be going unnoticed by quickly driving through the problem speed range, w/high volume music, and on less than perfect roads. I'm new to this forum, and know the original posts are over a year old, I'm hoping current readers will test their cars in this speed range and report findings.
