Sturmgrenadiere!!!!!!!!
As for the dive issue. I had a 98 Honda Prelude before I bought this car and trust me, the Audi handles nowhere near. But they are two totally different beasts. I never expected the 2.7t to drive like my honda so I wasn't too surpised that it had more dive and squat. However, it is first and foremost a LUXURY sedan. However, for a luxury sedan it handles like a lxury sedan should. that is, normal. try one with the sport package and compare then, since the 540 has a sport suspension, compare apples to apples.
As for cutting corners in production to keep the costs down. I see no evidence in that. In fact, I rode in my cousins 528 and it is not as tight as my 2.7 is. And it just doesn't feel as comfy inside.
Of course all of these opinions are just that, opinions. You have to decide for yourself if you want a comfortable, yet sporty car with class and not nearly the kind of "image" that mb and bmw have or if you want a sport sedan that will jiggle on bad asphalt and shake apart in 4 or 5 years but at least you look good type car.
I made my choice, now, after talking to all these people and going through so much, it is your turn to make a decision.
I hope you are happy with any decision you make be it an Audi or BMW or MB.

Sturmgrenadiere - IMHO, just about everyone here is here because they prefer the ride/handling of the A6 to the competition. If you prefer something else, buy something else. I like the ride of my non-PSK 2.7T. More dive/bounce/roll than my last car ('97 Prelude Type SH)? You bet. More than some of the other cars I drove before buying the A6? Yes. Less than some cars I drove before buying the A6? Yes. Take the time, drive the cars, buy what you like best. As you said, $40K - $50K is not pocket change.
Big D - My friends don't understand why I traded the handling/overt sportiness of the Prelude for the A6... until I take them for a ride.

I live and work in the heart of the "Silicon Forest" in Oregon. I am surrounded by Intel, Nike, Sequent (IBM now), Inktomi/Enron etc.. I have seen way too many 'A type' graduates with too much confidence get themselves ahead of their earning potential in a short amount of time. And yes, their earning potential is high, but a debt-load is a debt-load and creeps up much faster than they realise. No college grad with his/her first or second job is immune to the axe, which now falls for any reason management can find anymore. We all were just trying to offer sound advice based on our ability to look back, which he CANNOT do.
He also complains about handling traits when he has not even test driven a PSK car yet. Several of us enlighten him to the fact that the handling traits he is looking for will never exist in such a car. Modify your 2.7Ts and 4.2s all you want, they will never handle like an M Coupe or Boxter S. His responses to the answers he asked for bordered on RUDE and were arrogant! Obviously, many of us did not like his tact, but we offered the advice and answers he asked for anyways. I am done responding to this subject with this posting because it has drifted way off the forums purpose, but I felt I had to put forth my reasoning for my previous postings.
The reason he received so much "life experience" advice is because of how he put forth his postings and attitude. Period. You and he can react in a terse manner or in grateful manner to the advice. We have no control over that. Lets just try to keep it friendly in here.
