Default Value - '96 A6Q

OK here goes...

I have all the reports and numbers at hand, but let me ask for opinions about the '96 A6Q. I am looking at one with 43K, all the options, clean title, all service records, well kept car. What would a reasonable price to pay be, and what would you consider paying?

Regards,

Default Can you weasel a used car salesman (and his manager)?

If your assertive, the dealer is desperate, and you can weasel a sales weasel, settle for $500-$800 over what the dealer paid for it on the trade in. This would be between a high $17K range to a low 19K range. I imagine that they want somewhere around $24K (remember that price is normally much more negotiable on a used car then a new one). I would also make sure that they have it as a certified used Audi with an extended warrantee.

You can see what the “blue book” value is at http://www.kbb.com

Good luck!

Muhammad.... with all the problems you have had with your other Audi and the dealership experience you have had, I say go out and buy a different car... Besides, that Bodystyle A6 is not really known to be a reliable car, and besides, it is slow, slow, slow... Just my honest opinion.. Take it with a grain of salt...

Muhammad,

I bought my 1996 A6Q about a year ago and have been really happy with it. I'm not sure what Kenny ment by "bodystyle A6 is not really known to be a reliable car"? Please explain if you can. Regarding slow, slow slow .... that's true if you compare it to the TT or A4, but I took this car out on the track with the Quattro Club and was pleased with it's performance. I agree with Steven S. regarding price, about a year ago we paid about $20.

Hope this helps!

Well, yes, you could say I have had my battles with the sales departments of dealerships. But this one is from a private seller.

As for a warranty, I plan to purchase an aftermarket warranty - have one on my current Audi.

Well if I had to deal with the same dealership, there is NO WAY on earth I would buy another Audi... I even saw a 528i up close yesterday and am starting to like the Bimmer grille quite a bit. But two factors play in, one being another dealership, which seems to be better, within an hour that I will use, until I relocate, which is the other, relocating before the end of the summer.

The problems haven't really been with the car since it only has had a few minor buggy things go wrong, nothing to put it off the road. It is just that the dealer has been so incredibly terrible that it seems like so much more. Very reliable car, actually! Just the automatic transmission is known to have problems. So far none, except the usual shifting to 2nd at 5mph!

As for slow, yes, it is slow as a boat up to about 30mph then it wakes up. Good passing power from 40-70mph… well, good for not having driven one of the turbos anyway!

I think kenny is talking about the automatic transmission problem. It was supposedly fixed after 1992, but some had the problem through 1994. My 1994 doesn't have the problem but it is only at 75K miles now. I understand the risk and live with it... I bought an extended warranty almost exclusively for that reason.

Did you do 0-60 times? My FWD is published at 9.9 seconds to 60, the Quattro is 10.9... I just don't buy that since I did a casual run to 60 in about 8 seconds, on a rainy day. 40-70mph time was about 5.5 seconds. I also drive a Jeep from time to time and that is published at 7.7 or something, to 60mph, and there is no way it is faster than the 12v A6. Of curse, maybe I am wrong!

I guess only 12v owners can have the final say about the speed issue but I wouldn't claim that the 12v A6Q automatic is a speed demon. It is adequate with enough to be called spirited over about 30mph. That’s all.

Default Somewhere in the low 19K range then

Also, it is true that the ‘95s and ’96 A6’s are not the most reliable vehicles. See: http://carpoint.msn.com/Vip/Overview/Audi/A6/Used.asp

Yeah, I saw those reports... I don't understand how the transmission problem could reappear for 1995 and 1996 after no reports of it happening in the 1994 model 100. Is there a different problem other than the loose shifting/RPM jump between gears? Same with the ac/climate control; 1994-1995 didn't see any change in the actual system, I understand.

In any event, unless the car I am looking at has any problems in those two areas as it sits (will have it inspected) this is nothing an extended warranty won't give me peace of mind over.

Default We have 2 cream-puff '97 A6Qs on the lot

Both are in the mid 50's regarding mileage. They are very nice cars to drive even if not the fastest things around. An old style A6 is my favourite chase car when doing a dealer trade. It is smooth, very comfortable, and great for droning in heavy L.A. traffic.

We are selling them for around 23K. Remember that they are Qs and command a premium. We have a FWD that will go for about 16K. These are real numbers.

For dealer shoppers. If you leave too small of a profit margin, the dealer does not any leeway to address any niggling problems.( Assuming you have an honest dealer. )You pay a wholesale price, you get a wholesale car - may need tires, brakes, belts, fluids changed, no warranty, no fiancing.

Also, by even offering such a low price, you will depress the resale market. Think about that the next time you trade in your Audi.

Buying private party is good if the person has been **** about maintaining the car and it hasn't had too many owners. The downside is that you have no recourse if things go wrong - even a warranty needs to be carefully checked out.
