To 2000 or 2001 thats the Question
The extra cost of the 2001 should be more than made up when you sell the car; a 2001 model will always be worth more than a 2000 model, never mind the fact that in your case the cars would only be a few months different in age. OTOH, dealers may be willing to cut a good deal on a 2000 right now, depending on how many they have sitting around.

1) ESP- stability control is now standard on the 2001. In the Midwest where I live this is a great option to have.
2) Why buy a 2000 unless you need it soon, or you can save substantially in price. With the 2001s coming this summer, your 2000 will be already depreciating. I figured I could wait an extra month or 2 and have a car that will be a "new" model for at least a year, and worth more long term.
3.) I didn't know it at the time but the warranty is going to be 4 years 50,000 miles for 2001 instead of 3 years 50,000. For me, that is an extra year of
coverage and free maintenance.
The 2001 is going to cost me about $1000 more than the 2000 I had planned to buy. In my case this is a $1000 well spent.
You need to decide if you need the car now, and what type of deal you can get on both, as well as decisions on colors and options. Either way you'll be getting a great car! Good luck!
1. While the 2000 will have a years more depreciation, it will appear to have less miles / year than the 2001. I.E a 1999 A6 Sedan with 36000 miles in good condition has a Kelly Blue Book Trade in of 22085, while an identical 1998 model with the same miles has a blue book of $21,560. The year newer car is only worth $525 more. If the 99 had been $500 more expensive than the 98 it's a wash.
2. If you want a 2001 w/ Sports package you have a significant wait (the first 2 months of 2001's won't have sports package).
3. If you want the cool accoustic parking, you have to buy Audi's overpriced GPS system in 2001.
4. ESP is a double edged sword, and it's not clear that you can effectively disable it.

I have a 2001 on order with sports pkg, and my dealer told me last week that the order was finally "accepted", whereas when she tried to order the sports pkg in April, it wasn't available. That means I should take delivery around early August. So I'd really like to know where you got this information about "the first two months". Can you be more specific?
I know that dealers are now able to do so. What I don't know is if they were able to change the configuration of their May or June cars to include Sports. I imagine that by the time the Sports order was acceptable, that all May cars were too late in C status to change.
Did your dealer tell you your order was placed for a car in their May allocation? I'd be happy to find out that I am wrong.
