Greetings and thanks again for your responses. I have called a few people today and have more to tell, sort of.

Well first I called a friend of mine who runs a large Ford/Mazda dealership. He first laughed at me, and then said that it must have been totaled and rebuilt. Then he got the NY title book (or something like that, I can't remember the name) and looked up what cases a salvage title would be issued in. He said always if an insurance company takes possession of a car. This can be when it is totaled (half current value or more) or stolen. Then the rebuilt title is issued when the car passes inspection after the salvage title is issued. I faxed him the VIN report because he was wondering about the 3 different rebuilt titles issued, and what time they happened. His opinion was that the car could have still been totaled even if it was stolen (stolen and totaled).

I also requested a copy of the title by fax from the seller and will look for that today some time. My dealer friend will fax that over to somebody he knows at some title place... I didn't get all the details just that he would find out more if I could fax him the title.

He also said that if a car is titled in NY from PA, the branding is removed. So I asked if it would be a clean title then in NY, and he said, yes it would, but said that was a 'bad part'.

So then, I called the warranty company, and they won’t touch salvage or rebuilt titled cars. Even if the NY title were clean, they would be able to get a VIN report just like I did and see that it was salvage in PA, and of course, not issue the warranty, or void it.

So there’s my answer since I can’t get a warranty… and even if I could, I still don’t know the whole story on the car. Even if it were a best case scenario and it was stolen, dinged in the back, recovered and titled as rebuilt, I don't want the trouble of the title history attached to the car... resale will be a nightmare, well I don’t have to go on about that. Could have been stolen, totaled, or stolen AND totaled. In any case, saving $10,000 is nothing compared to the horrifying potential, which y’all woke me up to. Ugh I am running like you told me!

So, does anybody want to unload a CLEAN TITLE 12v A6 in the northeast region? It must be a sedan, leather, sunroof, prefer Bose audio but that doesn’t really matter, also must be either green, blue, black, silver, or gray! FWD or Quattro, 1995-1997 model, mileage preferred under 60K but I’d consider higher and tell you it is worth nothing because of the high mileage.

Oh, keep in mind I am armed with a 60-day Carfax membership, so I might be a little out of my mind here soon!

Can't believe my bad luck! I think I bought it! Was the guys name Tom Cummins? I was looking here for info. on how to obtain an owner's manual, etc. and read your saga. I bought it a week ago, my wife has been commuting 120 mi/day in it w/o problem. I hope we never have to sell it.
