Default Temperature gauge is definately finnicky on hot, muggy days..

Chicago spring: one day 55 degrees another day 85 degrees. Every hot, humdid day the readout on the dash is consistently 4-5 degrees warmer than radio/billboard temps. On cooler days its right on.

Also, the car is really loud when the fan blower is high. The AC works well, however I've notice a H2O drip that gets vaporized after turning off the engine on real humid days. I'm Thinking the cooling sys. is supposed to do that, no?

Default Re: Finnicky and Drip.....

The temperature sensor in our cars is really designed to have optimum accuracy at the near freezing and freezing temperature zones. The sensor is as close to the road surface and as isolated from heat that is vehicle produced as can be done. The reading they are trying to give us best is one that lets us know of possible ice/snow conditions on the road surface itself. When the road surface heats up, it makes your sensor read the ambient temperature higher than it really is outside. If you are on the freeway for more than ten minutes, you will get a much more accurate reading in warmer weather. I find the same thing with driveing around town on these sunny days as you do about higher reading temperatures. It is normal and is even mentioned in my owners manual.

The drip is the condenstaion from your A.C. and is completely normal. In fact, if it is not dripping (outside, underneath where you have mentioned), particularly on humid days, then the water is most likely draining into your car somewhere.

Default I just reread your post and wish to edit.....

Is there any water dripping on the ground from the A.C.. There should be. If not, then it is draining somewhere it should not be. That may be the vaporizing you are hearing.

Default It's definately striking something awfully hot on its way out and..

thanks for the temp. gauge help. Admittedly, I did not re-peruse the manual about this subject, so I thank you for this DD I should have done myself.

I'm not overly concerned about the draining issue unless my H2O temp rises or water level falls. I would think this drip could wait for 7500 miles service, don't you think?

The A.C. unit has nothing to do with your cooling system if that is what you are refering to. The A.C. has a condensor that the outside (or inside if recirc is selected) air passes through. This condensor is the "cold part" that cools the air. A side benefit of this process is that the condensor dehumidifies the air. That is, the moisture in the air adhears itself to the condensor and drips off. This is why you have a drain that the water should be dripping onto the ground under your car from.

Default You're correct this is an AC issue and...

wherever that drain is, the H2O is hitting something hot on its way out.

Sounds to me like your drain was not installed correctly. As long as you are not having water build up in your vent system or condensor box, like has been a problem with the A8, then you should be fine for now.

My only concern would be that you may have some water building up somewhere and mildew will start to grow in your system where water is never evaporating because of a pooling effect. I have seen this here in the Northwest and it is very difficult to eradicate. It fills a car with that musty odor that mildew brings. If I were you, I would have your dealer look at it sooner than later.

I assume you are not hearing any "sloshing" emminating from your dash. I guess the drain system in the A8s clogs easily and people have drained up to a litre of water out of their HVAC plumbing.
