HID headlight self-leveling
The HID lights on my 2000 2.7T don't seem to be doing a very good job of keeping their beams level. When I'm driving around town at low speeds with the low beams on, moderate acceleration or braking produces big swings in the light pattern. If the top of the pattern is on the license plate of a car fifty feet ahead of me when I'm moving at a steady speed, stepping on the gas can move it up into the car's rear window.
Is this par for the course, or something that I can reasonably expect to have corrected by my Audi dealer?
Also, can the lights be adjusted so that the top edge of the beam is a straight line? On my car I have a pattern with three distinct steps descending from left to right, which I find mildly irritating.<p>Jim Hinde

No, the top cannot be adjusted to be a straight line. Both headlights produce the pattern shape, and one is aimed slightly higher than the other so the middle part merges between the two.
Your headlights aren't supposed to dynamically adjust. They adjust when stopped. When you go over bumps, your headlights will point up just like everyone elses.

Steve is correct. The lights basically just adjust for load more or less. As far as the pattern.....
is concerned, I assume that about half way across the pattern, the light line turns up about 30% or so off to the passenger side. If that is the case, this is done to illuminate road signs on the side of the road.
