Good grief!
I've only recently started visiting this site and forum so really don't know what's gone before. I have a 99 A6Q that has been as close to perfection so far as any car I've ever owned. And I've owned a few. And that's after a year and 10,500 miles, most of it in city traffic on some truly "mean streets".
However, I'm very dismayed by all of the posts I'm reading about problems, particularly on the 2.7T. Some of this stuff is truly scary. However, as I said, I'm new to the forum. Perhaps at this time last year there were equally as many horror stories about the 2.8. If there were, it's probably just as well that I didn't read them. I am well aware of many electrical gremlins on the '98's, however.
Could it really be that Audi's encouraging return to popularity has put too much of a strain on both the production facilities as well as the North American support infrastructure? It would appear from what I'm reading that there's a lot of "yes" on both counts.
I have my reservations about my servicing dealer -University Audi in Seattle - but I think they are sincerely trying to redress some old sins, and therefore I will be happy to give them the benefit of the doubt. But, like too many Audi stores, you're sharing parts and service space with other higher volume brands - in this case VW and Subaru. Both of whom sell an astounding number of cars in this area.
I probably will invest in an extended warranty before too long, because there are an awful lot of fiddly bits that can potentially break. And, in the case of Audi, it appears that none of those bits is very cheap. However, so far absolutely the only thing that has gone wrong is a coolant temp sensor, and that went bad two weeks ago and was quickly replaced by the dealer without an appointment.
I guess I should probably have them replace my fuel sensors when I have the 15,000 service, but otherwise that too works just fine. I haven't received the notice, but AoA Customer Service told me yesterday that my car is included in the recall. Hell, I still don't even have any rattles other than the key shaking in the transmitter housing and the coins I put in the card drawer. Amazingly well built car. Can't say it often enough.
But...I will probably continue to read all of these horror stories and slowly begin to sweat.
Tick, tick, tick.
When you do go for the extended warranty, make sure you buy it before your new car warranty expires (36 months/50k miles) ... that way you will get better coverage... and a contract with exclusions rather than a list of covered parts. Try WarrantyByNet.com @ (877)239-8363 and try Brandon Lopez @ ext 325. I got my A6 warranty from them and they're pro all the way. Have yet to make a claim but I don't have any doubts. Also Heritage @ (800)548-4671 (dealt with Bill) are very good although a little higher on price.

Nowadays, it's probably a good idea for anyone with a highline car to consider a warranty when the factory one runs out. Modern cars are very complicated and have lots of gadgets; no one is quite sure what will happen to cars as their electronics age and wither, since this is a relatively new phenomenon. You can wait and get the warranty at any time (just not from Audi), so there's no rush.
Remember, no news is good news. I suspect not all of the readers and posters of this forum will post every day that they have had no problem with their car. Keep driving your car and don't worry. The A6 is a great product.

Have you noticed that we all have few problems in common, other than the recalled fuel level sensor? That's a good sign, right? If you want to see pain, find the Kia owners BBS.
If you do have major trouble, please post so we can compare experiences.
Ext warranty is interesting...especially if you need to replace the trans. Think I'll take my chances. It took me years to break even on ext warrs on my Saabs, and the A6 is a better engineered & built car.<p>98 A6 2.8Q-Tip blk/onyx.
