2001 280HP W8 Passat? This is a poor man's bargain A6 4.2.
I would say that VW and Audi does a good job of capturing different types of customers.
If someone wants a luxury interior, go with an Audi. If someone wants more horse-power but don't care about interior, then they can go with Volkswagon.
My concern is differentiation between brands and how VW position their products. While most of the VW/Audi cars share many similar/same parts, it is getting harder to make an intelligent decision.
I like the new facelift on the Passat (the current body style is very boring). I can't wait to see the new Passat 4Motion Wagon to replace my existing Subaru Wagon sometime in 2002.<p>

utterly stupid, why does Passat get V8 and A4 doesn't?
In Europe, VAG is having a huge problem with brand erosion. They made Skodas and Seats which are so similar to VWs that people have bought a lot fewer VWs. And to add to that genius, they are going to cannibalize Audi.
They've supposedly brought in people from VW of A and AoA to help them fix this problem.
Here's a first tip:
Don't put a V8 in the Passat. Now that they've tried to remake Audi as a performance arm in the US, kicking up the VW performance doesn't make sense.
