It all depends on your wheel/tire combo diameter. If you wanted a bigger wheel, you'll probably use lower profile tires and the resulting diameter might not change that much.

If you want to go to 17 inch wheels on a 2.7t then you need to use 235/45/17 to keep the same tire diameter. I am using this size on my A6 2.7t on 17x8" wheels. You could probably use a wheel from 7.7"-8.5" with this same tire size. Make sure the wheel is for an Audi A6 so that the bolt circle and offset are correct for the car. BBS, Ronal, Audi and others make 17" wheels that will work on the A6.

I'm running 245/45 x 17s on S6 AVUS 17" x 8" wheels. The increase in the revs/mile is + 1.44% over the stock 215/55 x 16s. The odo/speedo error is + 1.25%, so I'm just about "zeroing out" the odo/speedo error. I have the Eibach lowering springs, and there is no problem at all with fit/clearance, including aggressive driving on undulating roads.<p>Peter R Dieckerhoff
