I got a 30 minute ride in a new M5 today. I temporarily hate my 4.2 :-( .....
But the sap (friend) paid almost $80,000 for it! I would have bought a loaded 996. Or a 4.2 and another $25,000 worth of tax-free muni bonds ;-)

actually, i don't think it is all that. i test drove one for almost an hour, and it is not what i expected of a super saloon.
i have an M Roadster, and the M5 feels like a slug. For an "M" series car, I would expect it to go quicker...<p>Not an Audi Owner yet...

The S6 is no match for the M5 in terms of ride and handling but what it loses in driver enjoyment it makes up in value, comfort and style.<p>Haseeb Ali

The M5 is a great hybrid sport sedan/ sports car,,, but in reality how many M5 owners will actually use their car as an everyday driver, or use it as a family car hauling 4 people?? It is simply too expensive, too exotic, too impractical as an everyday driver, yet, not in the same league as say a Porsche 996, or even a Ferrari, although its performance numbers are almost in that class..
I have yet to see an M5 owner tear through a hairpin turn with 5 people aboard, or have pleasant things to say about those 18-inch wheels for normal driving... For the price of one M5 with th ridiculous markup.. I can buy a base model A6 Avant, and have leftover cash for an M-roadster for the weekends, which makes more sense to me...

I haven' been lucky enough to even SEE an M5 yet, let alone go for a ride in one!
I agree with you in buying a 996 instead. Or for me, I would get 3 or 4 UrS6's... or 2 really nice with low mileage + $20k for mods!<p>>>Muhammad
