Default Rough running 2.7T

My 2000 2.7T is driving me mad. A month after taking delivery the car starting running and idling rough. Not bad all of the time, but not smooth like it was at the beginning. Have brought it into the dealer twice, and the situation has been the same. They claim to have read the fault memory, no faults seen. They then clear the memory, and claim that there is no problem. Sure enough when I pick it up the car runs great for 2 - 3 days then starts to deteriorate. Have tried all types of gas with no impact. Hot or cold engine, same problem.

Could someone explain what the dealer could be doing to make the car run well. Do the diag tools clear something that contributes to performance?

Plug fouling, something about the ECU? Is it tip? An interaction between the ECU and tip chip?

Default Thought about it some more, Jim.....................

In addition to above, could it be a fuel mixture problem? All this is now chip controlled. Too rich a mixture? Is the ECU telling the engine to supply too much fuel? I'm not clear on the parameters under which the tip chip would direct the ECU. The tip chip adjusts to your driving. Could a defective ECU be misinterpreting what the tip chip is telling it to do with the fuel mixture as it adjusts to your driving style? Or could it be a defective tip chip sending the wrong information? Then the VAG tool cleans it all out until it readapts?

Is there any possibility that they cleaned the sparkplugs, and forgot to mention it?

Default Had a similar problem …

…although mine was most noticeable at idle. My dealer found that two cylinders were misfiring at about 5 times the rate given within design specifications. When they finally got a hold of the Audi rep that “knows everything there is to know” about the 2.7 engine, he said it was a known problem. It seemed that when Audi put the 2.7 in the A6, they lowered the idle rate to keep a better standing with the EPA. They had come to realize that this was a mistake and were working on a new ECU program. Keep in mind this was back in March on a 2000 2.7 6-speed. I don’t know when the change was put into effect on a consistent basis, but you might check with the dealer with these details. I know several of my issues with engine roughness went away with the ECU change.

I suppose that they could be cleaning the plugs. At least that makes sense. Next trip in I suppose that I need to watch them.

Did you happen to get a number or some description of the change so that I could track it down? Were your plugs fouling?

I had similar bucking/surging that seemed to go away for several days after dealer fiddled with car but said he could find nothing. Have you found out if your dealer cleaned the plugs or did anything else that explains the temporarily improved performance?

Default Re: Dealer cleaning plugs?

The dealer has not told me anything and I'm fairly confident that they are witholding information. They are not even trying to help me with the idle problem...just keep giving me the corp line bull of "thats the way the car was designed". I believe that the idle is too low, and I'll be meeting with the rep in a week or so. I'll bet I know what he is going to say, but I gotta try.
