Washed my 4.2 today and the windshield cracked.....
There was a small pit in the glass near the top of the windshield from a rock thrown off of a semi's tire about 2 weeks ago. I started washing in morning shade, but by the time I was done, 2/3rds of the car was in the sun, including the windshield. When I gave the car a final rinse, the crack started at the top and went all the way to the cowl, tip-to-toe so to speak. First I get rear-ended at about 3 MPH 3 weeks ago. Now this! What will be next?
Has anyone had to replace their windshield, and if so, was there anything you learned I want to know about?

You know.....
It is remarkably straight in it's vertical nature. I had forgotten about the TSB on A6 windshields concerning stress cracks. Hmmmm. I will be talking to my service department tomorrow I guess.

I have had my 2.7 T windshield replaced. It got a real smashing rock chip which then spread. A good glass man can easily tell if a rock chip caused yours- and I think it was the chip, which became a crack because of the hot-cold thing. My chip became a crack after sitting in a hot sun. I seriously doubt if it is a stress crack that is a warranty item. Sounds like a comprehensive auto claim to me.

Sorry to hear this Stu B and good luck with your service dept/insurance. I have had a tiny stone
chip towards the center of my windshield since a couple of days after I got it. This should not pose any problems but I sometimes wonder about the tendancy of our windshields to have stress cracks. The week after next my car goes in for its 1st service and the fuel tank sensors and a couple of other small things. I'll have them take a look.
