Default TAR?!?!?

I drove through a construction zone yesterday and now I have a nice black "skirt" all along the side of my silver car.
Does anyone know of a miracle solvent or some other way to remove a lot of tar?
Thanks,

Eric.

Man I hate tar... citrus solvent on a terry towel will take care of it but make sure you properly remove the solvent... might need a mild degreaser, then wash the spots, then wax if it is on a painted body panel. Otherwise you might try a tar remover from a auto parts store... I have never tried those, though.

Mare sure you wear rubber gloves when dealing with these solvents... they are nasty if you get them on your hands.

Good luck!
>>Muhammad

Default Re: TAR?!?! Any car parts store or the automotive section of

a store like Wal Mart should have a selection of bug & tar removers...I think the last one I bought was made by Dupont. Most of the cleaners smell like keresene is the main ingedient. They are effective and do disolve the tar easily, but they also remove any wax or polish you have on the car.

Default Stoner makes a product called Tarminator

check out their website. My wife bought some similar German stuff at BH Motor Accessories from the Autosol line. And I know that Turtle Wax makes one too.

So basically, there are plenty to choose from. If I recall correctly, most are petroleum based and take a lot of elbow grease. Afterwards, make sure to clean the area thoroughly (probably with the dreaded diswashing liquid or Simple Green) and then re-wax.

Plain liquid wax has always worked for me with a bit care. Pre-wash w/carwash soap helps.

Default I am going to get humiliated for this but what I have done is

use cologne. I had several spots of tree sap on my car and desperate to get it off I used some cologne. It worked like magic. No damage to paint. Just wash are after cleaning with a mild soapy car wash and re-wax.

I have since used it on tar, sap, and other odd road spatterings. It works great. Don't use a cheap cologne, use a good one like armani, TH, CK, etc. . . Spray directly on the material wait a few seconds and wipe with a slightly damp cloth. Make sure you use a 100% cotton cloth and turn it frequently.

Let me know how you do. No, this is not a joke.
00 2.7T

Default Agree w/everyone, but have to tell this story.

You should absolutely use a traditional "bug and tar remover", but a friend of mine recently wiped her whole (white) car down with WD-40 as it had "black tar-like spots" all over it. Took everything off and left a great shine too. I'm wondering if this might be less egregious than the kerosene-based traditional products. Any chemists care to comment?

Default Figures it only likes the good stuff !

Not so mysterious. Look at nail polish remover - alcohol-based too.

Default Laquer thinner...8 bucks a gallon and will take it right off...won't harm paint

just dampen a rag with it and wipe it off.
