Default Headlight washer cap NOT a warranty item???

My first "problem." I knew it wouldn't be all milk 'n honey forever...

I Noticed the ugly gaping hole in front of the passenger side headlight. Damn! But I kind of expected it after our late-night rainstorm the other day when I had to use the washers while driving. After hearing about the problem here, I was afraid of it happening to me.

Anyway- called the dealer, and was told it will take about a week. And it would be about $15-20.

HUH? This isn't a covered item?

"well, it could have come off at a car wash," the service guy said. "Um, it was the other night in the rainstorm while I was on 93 going south!" was my reply.

Has anyone else fought this battle yet? It's only $20, but I'm more peeved about the principle. I mean, this is a pretty common problem, from what I hear, and it seems like a silly design (hello, aerodynamics 101 anyone?). That, and at $43k, this shouldn't really be an issue.

Thanks-
Marc

Default A friend of mine with '99 2.8 had replaced free...

I don't know the dealers name, but he lives in the Philly area. He said they did not question it at all. I think it depends on your dealer. I hope the smooth design on my 4.2 holds out.

I am normally not very argumentative about little things like this but Audi knows they have a problem with the headlight washer covers coming off. I have a 2000 and they have come loose, but not actually off, several times in just a few months. I believe that the 2001 has a new design that takes care of this problem. I would be pretty forceful on this issue since this may not be the only time you have to replace it.

By the way my headlight washer cover did come off in a carwash once so it is surely possible but that shouldn't happen either. The carwash that mine fell off in was a brushless wash that is really quite gental on the car.

Default I had to pay for mine- around $80 becuase they had to be painted. So if you get them for $20...

I might need the contact information of your dealer and next time order it from them. I just wanted the wounded eye to be fixed, so I didn't press the issue with the warranty.

Cheers,
Ernesto

Default I'd demand they cover it and

agree it's not the Jackson but the principle. As ohers have said, even if it DID come off in a carwash, what does that mean? Audi would have to put a disclaimer in their warranty stating "do not take your car to a carwash as it will void the warranty". Ludicrous!

Default Not only should it be fixed under warranty, it's a design flaw! And.................................

this is a fix another poster put on the board about 1 1/2 months ago:

"I had a new headlight washer cap put on my A6 this morning (it blew off last week on my drive home from work). The dealership service dept. showed me their quick fix for ensuring that the cap doesn't blow off again. They wrap a plastic tie (one of those cheap ones that cinches up nice and tight) around the base of the cap where it attaches to the washer head. I also had them put one of those ties on the cap that didn't blow off last week. Hopefully their solution will prevent this very annoying problem from happening again."

I have not driven my car much at night and in the wet but the other week I lost one of my caps. The dealer ordered the cap and had it painted and never brought up the question of payment. When I went to get it there must have been 6 caps on the shelf waiting for people to pick them up. I asked about glueing them on but that drew a blank, so when I got home I pulled them up a put a spot of super glue gel on each side of the clip.

That definitely should be a warranty item ! My dealer replaced it for free, no questions asked, even though the service manager did suggest it could have come off in a car wash, he was NOT implying that meant it wouldn't be a covered item.

no way you should have paid. I've had two fall off and Ira in Danvers, MA replaced both under the warranty.

I was told that later 2000s do actually have it glued to the washer head.
