Default Got Rear-ended Today by BMW

A woman driving her dad's old BMW today rear ended me today while I was stopped at a four way intersection. My 01 A6 Avant, two months old, now has a scratched bumber with some small coin sized dents in the black part (Casablanca white).

Any suggestions for the repair? I think I'm gonna put up a fuss until I get a new bumper. Anything I should ask the mechanic who appraises the damage to look for? She was going probably 30 miles an hour. No one was hurt and we both drove away.

And, another question. We now have over 6K on this car, and the service light hasn't come on. Isn't it supposed to at 5K? We're taking it in next week.
rj

Default When will the madness end? :-(

Sorry to hear, and welcome to an unfortunate club.

I wonder though, scratches and coin sized dents from being hit at THIRTY mph? An impact at that speed should have caused significant body and/or frame damage, considering that the offset crash tests you often see are done at 40mph...

I believe the service reminder is supposed to come on at 7500 (or just before that). That's when it appeared on my '99. Maybe it's changed, but on the '99's it's a message that appears in the odometer section of the instrument cluster.

Default Hope your experience with her insurance isn't as bad as mine

I'm still fighting with Progressive Insurance (F#&$%RS!) over being rear-ended. They refused to pay the bill for my car repairs. Plus they cut off my rental car about 1 week before my car was ready. And they don't want to pay my lost time at work. Again - F#&$%RS! Tell your Audi dealer to replace the bumper with a new one. Insist on it. The insurance company has an obligation to 'repair the car back to the state before the accident'. Anything less, get a lawyer. I had to resort to this and the total bill now is about $8000 for a $3000 accident that was not my fault. I had to pay the repair bill myself and it will probally be another 2 months before I see a dime. Best of luck...

GO QUATTRO!

Default Check your brake lights and see if they're on when you're just holding the car at a stop light. My

brake light activating switch needed adjustment. It was so insensitive as it came adjusted from the factory that my break lights were NOT on under light braking pressure (as in some instances of freeway creeping in traffic and while stopped at traffic lights).

I'm getting very curious to learn if some of the A6's getting inexplicably rear-ended have this same problem!

Default Your Crash just sounds cosmetic....

A good body shop should be able to prime the paint, resurface it, and paint it over making it look new... A new bumper in that case would be certainly overkill and the insurance company is not obligated to pay for that.. I don't think that lady rear ended you at 30mph... Had she done that, the entire rear end of your car would've been totalled near where the rear seats are..

Default Let's be careful out there. Pass it on...

Members of this board seem to be having more than their fare share of accidents lately. For the most part, AudiWorld members are driving enthusiasts, myself included. As a result, we probably drive more aggressively ( but better) than average, but still deal with traffic full of "average skilled" people. Although this accident sounds mostly cosmetic (thank goodness), more serious things can happen.

Don't mean to sound preachy, and definitely NOT assigning blame, just kinda saying, let's all careful out there.

Default Sorry about the damage. It's frustrating no matter how severe . FYI on the bumper

Even if you get a new bumper, it will need to be painted. Any body shop, Audi or otherwise, will recieve the replacement part unpainted. They will have to paint it to match your car.

I am somewhat obsesssive when it comes to auto repair so I definitely relate to your demand for a new bumper. I am just suggesting that there may virtually no visible difference between a replaced/repainted vs. repaired/repainted bumper.

The difference may be in the time it takes for your auto to be repaired. Waiting for the bumper part may take weeks or months. In any case you may be forced to try and wax the new paint (after it's cured) in the dead of winter. May not be an issue but it is a consideration. Just a thought.
BTW, I had my rear bumper repainted and they made it look factory perfect.

Good luck and glad you are o.k.,
00 2.7T

Default Your service indicator can be reset etc. . . My manual calls for

first service at 8K miles BTW. The service indicator was set for 7500 when the car was delivered to me. You can check it by starting the car and leaving it in park. Press the left hand stalk on the instrument cluster and it will scroll through the warning system and also indicate the service interval remaining.

Please double check your manual because I am doing this from memory. Please let me know if I am wrong also. Thanks
00 2.7T

Default Poor bumper cap design

Not only Audi is guilty of this. In the name of vanity, they craft these huge, complex pieces of bumper cap in one piece. Impressive engineering, but it means that for all but the tiniest marks, the entire cap must be replaced. My body shop initially thought of doing some repair, but said it wasn't possible. Thank goodness the other person's insurance company was paying.
