Do you really need much more than than? I think you can get a fancy-schmancy digital readout unit from some catalogs.

I know you said aside from Nav, but...

there are numerous GPS products put out by GARMIN and others that are relatively cheap (~$150-500) that will tell you direction, speed, maps, etc and much more. They are not nice and pretty like the GPS in Europe and Japan, but they are quite adequate for trips once you figure out how to use them. I have the GPS III (~$350) and use it mostly for long trips to places I am unfamiliar with and find it useful. A cheaper one could be useful if you just want it as a compass, but they are not that attractive to mount on the dash.
