Its just the cfc free stuff in cars now. Not as good at all, thank Ralph Nader and the greenies. Also, this sux with the onyx interior too. Been in the 90's here in NJ this week and my fn driver seat always seems to be parked in direct sunlight! Sure look strange driving while leaning forward with the seat reclined til it cools off. Its only May!

The "Texas way" of getting max cold air...
1. Roll down all the windows before you get into the car (if your remote is coded)
2. Set both temps on full "LO".
3. Set vent selctor to "center only".
4. Turn Recirculation on.
5. Fan at full blast.
6. Apply cold Shiner Bock to your forhead, before drinking. Longnecks fit in the lower cupholder perfectly!
Really - I have found that the Auto controls do not work well in cooling the car.

R134a is about 85% as effective as R12
So yes, it is less effective.
Honestly, my A/C works great on my 2000 A6. I was just thinking of this yesterday when it cooled my car from over 100 to about 80 in 2 or 3 minutes.
I really think the key is how you direct the air from the vents. It's a big car and if you shoot the air over your head, up the center or some other trick, it'll just cool the back of the car before the front. I think you have to direct the stream so it aims towards you at lieast a little bit. Of course the problem with this is when you get in a 74 degree car and the thermostats are set to 73 degrees, it feels like the car is trying to freeze you out by blowing cold air at you when the rest of the interior is almost the right temp.

Don't feel bad, my 14 month old 2.7T had no a/c after just one summer.
Yes, I exercised it during the non summer months. It could simply be a cracked hose, loose plumbing, or coolant escape via some other simple malfunction. I get a little peeved that it encountered problems after only one summer but at this point, I'm numb when it comes to malfunctions (and refuse to post when each one arises).
Most importantly, it will be a simple fix albeit inconvenient. So schedule an appointment asap and you will be cool hand luke in no time.

Mine seems to work very well. It has been in the high 80's and sunny this past week, and the car seems to cool down very fast. When I got home today, the external temp reading was 90 deg F, and when I stuck a fast responding darkroom thermometer into the central air vents I got a reading of 56 deg. F. The fans were running at about 50%.
