Default I hate those damm 4x4 lifted pick ups.(more ranting)

So I'm driving to work this afternoon in So Cal traffic(50mph then slow
to a crawl and back up to 60) when I end up behind this Dodge pick up.
It was lifted and had those big off roading tires that hum. Suddenly I see
this streak of light shoot up from under one of the rear tires, and as it
hit me that this streak was a rock, SMACK!!!
It hit me, literaly. Now I have a crack about 1/2" long on the passenger's
side of the windshield about 6" down from the roof. When I got to work I
took a closer look and saw that a nice chunk of glass is gone on the outside.

I's there anything I can do to repair this and make the crack disapear? I
heard somewhere(don't exactly remember where) that it was possible to have
cracks "buffed" out of your windshield, is this true? Any help is apreciated,
oh and thanx for listening.

and now a big 'ol crack on my windsield!

Default There are services listed in the yellow pages that

offer windshield repair but, my experience has been that if a crack has started to propagate more than 1/2" from the point of impact, then the windshield has to be replaced. At least that's what the companies that I called the last time, 5+ years ago, told me.

Good Luck!!

Default Should be fixable

DrH is right. Get it fixed soon, before it starts to run. The repair will keep it from running. Your insurance may cover the repair too.

Sounds too large to fix. Think new windshield.

Default Remember, it only takes one morning to see that crack go from 2" to a few feet. Get it replaced

your insurance should cover it. Just take the advice of others here who have replaced their windshield. I would go through the dealer glass supplier. The windshield placement/sealing is critical because you can end up with water leaks if it's not placed correctly. I bet you could have it scheduled and completed within 48 hours.

Default I have had 1/4" cracks and chips repaired with great success

and insurance has covered it every time. It keeps the crack from becoming worse and leaves a small blemish from the repair. I think it is worth it to do this. Check Yellow Pages like DrH says.

Default Hope you got the license plate number.

You can have your insurance company contact that person, asking for reimbursement of damages. If necessary, you can got to small claims court.

This is important! Do the same thing if a truck spills junk all over your car or doesn't have anything covering its wheels in the rear to keep stuff from flying off its rear wheels or if you're in a convertible and someone tosses a cigarette butt out that flys into your car.

Otherwise, they'll keep doing it. Take a stand!

Default Works good and usually insurance will not charge the deductible

you will see small lines where the repair was but not really noticable.
