teeny door pocket problem..temp fix...
When I got home I examined the situation a bit further to find a temp fix: With the driver's door wide open, there's a small metal pin visible on the right side of the small pocket door, as well as 2 grooves which guide the pin. You can use a paper clip to guide the pin as you're slowly closing the small pocket door so it starts following the top groove. then just pull the paper clip out and finish closing the pocket door. It should stay closed. Now just don't ever open it again!
Seems like an odd design, with no apparent incentive for the pin to follow the correct upper path on closing. However, with practice I've noticed that slamming the door shut seems to work much of the time. I'm speculating that with a slam the pin is more likely to take the right path for some reason, or the pin actually bounces up into the latched position at the end of its travel.
And while it may seem like I have way too much time on my hands to even bother, here in Florida, we have plenty of toll roads, and that pocket comes in pretty handy for quarters...
