I did tonight. After finishing a business dinner, I went out of the restaurant to the valet to get my silver 2.7T. The guy pulls out the key and says "it's over there, I'll get it". I looked over and saw it about 20' away at the curb in front of the place. I say, "No problem. Hand me the keys and I'll just get in and go". As I hit the remote, I walked to the car, opened the door, got in and just as I was going to put the key in the ignition, I relaized I should check the trunk to make sure my briefcase with my laptop was still there. I got out and walked around to the trunk. When I opened it, I saw a whole bunch of golf bags filled with clubs but no briefcase. I thought, "What the hell is this? Where's my computer?" After standing there for a moment like an idiot with my thumb up my butt, I suddenly realized this wasn't my silver 2.7T! I looked around and about three cars back, there she was. Closed the trunk, walked back to the other 2.7T (this time mone), popped the trunk, saw my breifcase, slammed the trunk, opened the door, put the key in the ignition, started her up and drove away, hoping that no one saw me be stupid. Hah. Felt like a real jerk. Sheesh..
(Maybe I should have checked to see if the mileage was lower and tried the key?)

 

Went to the parking lot and was clicking my remote for about 30 seconds before I figured out it wasn't my Audi. The car was identical, until I glanced at the plate. Very embarassing.

So we're standing there after a nice dinner at AltaMira in Sausalito/CA, and as I see the other couple get into ready to drive, I'm like, wow, that looks just like my car- nice to see a twin about town. The couple getting in are talking with the-now first couple in line and don't realize it's not their car. They get in, start the car and are getting ready to go, when I step out (as I get "Does the obsession ever stop?" look from my GF) in a 45o angle to check out which model it was (2.8/27T/4.2) and I see the license plate rim, and go, oh we went to the same college.... wait, that's my plate, uhm wait that's my car.

They've closed the doors and are putting on the seatbelt when I start telling the valet- "Hey- that's my car". He's giving me a look like yeah I wish that was my car too, and I'm like "LOOK THEY'RE DRIVING AWAY MY CAR. YOU GUYS GOT THE WRONG AUDI" and he's all like "Uh?" When I turn around a look around the lot, near the entrance there is the "other" twin. I point to it, and another valet guy who, thankfully, he's smarter than the first one, steps in front of the car, and tells the driver of the car to roll down the window so he could check out the tags. Oh wait, I was right. Now it takes the driver about a minute to believe the guy, and then it hits him- "Yeah, you're right mine is an automatic" Uhm hello? They all half a laugh about it, and I'm sitting wondering what if I was 5 minutes later, and the other guy had a 6sp like mine, how the heck do you trace down your car after it's left the restaurant? If they paid cash, you're SOL.

Can't wait to get those S6 Avus wheels on after the snow..... I think I can laugh about it now....

Was 1/3 of the way home before I figured it out as we had been partying a bit... TO make it worse, it was my wife's boss's car!

 

Hardly any valet service at restaurants down in South Africa. I prefer it that way.....

 

Now remember this! Yours has the USMC plate, mine has the Veteran plate.

 

Once I was parked in front of a convenience store in my friend's car awaiting his return. I was sitting in the passenger's seat. A woman comes tearing out of the store, jumps in the driver's seat, and tries to get her key in the ignition. I'm just looking at her and not quite sure what to say. Suddenly she realizes there's a strange man (well...) sitting in the passenger's seat looking at her in a puzzled fashion. Her jaw drops, she turns white, and then looks around. "Oh my gosh, this isn't my car! I'm so sorry!" She jumped out and got into her red Escort wagon. I was sitting in my friend's maroon Nissan 200SX.

I hope she's more lucid when she's actually *driving*. :-)

On the other hand, we somtimes have to check plates to indentify my wife's Toyota minivan. ;-)

Didn't see the plates and jeez, what are the odds of 2 siver A6's in a line of 4 cars?
Better one: In Las vegas I got in a valeted rental Taurus and drove for an hour via three hotel valets before I realized there sure are a lot of blue rental Tauruses. Drove back to the hotel valet and swapped it out for My tub. Good thing the guy whose car I took was still in the hotel.

 

Knew there was a reason I chose silver over vanilla/royal.
