Annoying "dash" rattle/clunking/clanking identified and solved. Yes!!! (longish)
I never posted this complaint (didn't want to sound like some whiny texan..."problem #17 blah, blah, blah)"), but this one was truly annoying on a near-$50K vehicle.
Not long after delivery I began noticing a clanking/clunking sound seemingly coming from deep in the right side of the dash, or possibly the right-front door. It was particularly puzzling because under normal conditions the car was tight. But hit a good bump (or series of them) especially with the right-front wheel, and at times it almost sounded like the dashboard was gonna fall off. Bad. Really bad.
At under 2,000 miles, I returned the car to the dealer with this complaint. After a day, I was told "It's the aftermarket wheel dust shields." (I knew exactly what sound they very occasionally make, and this wasn't that, but I figured their diagnosis "absolved" the service department.) The noise continued, maybe getting worse.
Should I post this on AW? Naw, I'd only hear cackling from some of the unfriendly doofus fringe here. So I kept on truckin'...but not happily.
Comes my 5,000 mile service yesterday, and I try again. Spoke to my "Brand Specialist" and at length to the service advisor. Also wrote a long, detailed note (the second one) including a Lemon-law-inspired reference to "second request to fix the same problem" fearing that we'd again not solve this. But I was wrong!
First, they test drove the car on a stretch of road I'd suggested. Over the phone, the service advisor said, "We heard the rattle, and it REALLY IS annoying!" Win #1. After removing the right front door panel and thoroughly "going over" the glove box, they thought it might need a complete replacing of the glove box. Then I got a second call: "We got it!" BIG WIN #2.
I knew my car had come by truck from an Ohio Audi dealer in return for "cash and a TT" dealer-to-dealer trade. What I did not know (nor did my dealer) was that my 4.2 had been only partially PDI'd. On the pre-delivery inspection, one of the items is something like "Remove shock absorber plastic 'stops' (or some such)." I guess these are doo-hickeys on top of the shock assembly, possibly to limit damage from cars on transporters going over bumps. Who knows? Anyway, mine had NOT been removed. Presto!!!
This morning, my drive to work was blissful! Clear blue sky reflecting off that pretty Nemo hood. And best of all, not a rattle/clank/clunk to be heard.
Hearty thanks to McGrath Audi, Glenview, Illinois! You da men!
My "clunking" in the dashboard area was finally resolved after a couple thousand miles, when I figured out that my "aftermarket" Audi tire pressure gauge was floppin' around inside the glove box...a strategically placed box of Pledge wipes has solved that dilemma.
