Default FWD tips. Yeah, most of you have QTR, but may occasionally drive FWD cars.

"Mortals with FWD cars can find this helpful: "The fwd oversteer thing is quite a big issue. It's not nearly as satisfying as rwd oversteer but still eminently possible. IMHO this is the way to learn how to do it. Take a wide clear corner (constant radius) with a low friction coefficient and go through it at 95% with a light throttle. Now try it at 100% and notice the cars attitude. Mild understeer probably with the bonnet raising slightly under power. Now try it with a trailing throttle at the same speed and notice how the attitude changes. The nose will be lower and the rear lighter. You will find that the understeer has been killed but you will also be losing speed. Now go hard into the corner maybe at maybe 102/103% and lift off half way through. This time the attitude will be even more pronounced. It depends very much on the car but at the very least you will feel strain on the outside of the rear tyres. Play with this till you feel the rear actually break out and then play with applying the power and a little opposite lock to pull it back into line. As you become more proficient you will be able to start braking more aggressively as you enter to quickly unsettle the car and then apply the throttle faster and harder. At this stage you will generally be cornering faster than before if you are on a loose surface. Finally, and normally only on a loose surface, you will approach the bend and the start of your turn will involve a very fast flick ("scandinavian flick") in the opposite direction of the corner. You then immediately turn hard into the corner and brake with the left foot. Stay on the power. The car will be nicely balanced and neutral with a nice oversteer slide throughout the bend. Practice on gravel ideally since you will break driveshafts on dry tarmac in a normal car (done it several times) You then adapt these techniques for different roads and circumstances. i.e. dry road simply brake hard normally as you start the turn and be ready to apply the power and lock. Applying the lock will be natural. Applying power will not. But it is the power application that pulls you through the slide. Do not brake or you will simply spin!!" Default Wouldn't you say that technique would be similar with quattro...

at least on drive pavement, because of the way power is distributed with the quattro system?

Default Yes, but you have to be more "brutal" to get the *** to slide. Haven't managed to do it with the S6

yet, but I only tried a few times. Also I do not think I was as much committed as I should have been.

Default Yes, to a slightly lessor degree. We had a great example at the ABS training in AZ.

The instructors took about 15 of us out on the big track in 4 Audis. They did the flick, backed off the gas, slid sideways diagonally across the track, and then pounced back on the gas when we approached the far side of the track. They built up speed and did it again, and again, and..... It was really cool ! It was like downhill skiing in cars. The drivers coordinated the slides so you had this conga line of sliding Audis.

At about 80mph they also drafted each other within a few inches of one another and drove side-by-side with side mirrors overlapping and then folding back the mirror of the car next to it by slowing down very gently.

Tires only lasted about 2 weeks of training. Cars held up fine. The Lexii were a little tattered. The Mercedes cupholder was broken. The Volvo tranny was slipping. The BMW spun out many times - worst was when it went up the dirt embankment and dumped a few pounds of dust and dirt into the car ( silly ABS had windows all open ).

Default I like the idea of relating it to...

downhill skiing! Sort of makes it more fun.

After upgrading the suspension on my car (17' wheels & tires, Eibach's and rear swaybar) it definitely has a more neutral attitude.

Default Hah ! We did play for shooters in the slalom - knock over over a cone, you owed the instructor a

drink that night at the hotel. They were never out of drinks.
